With 2 EPs and plenty of live shows under his belt, Lou Barlow has created a unique identity, a refreshing sound, and a powerful collection of well crafted songs on True Nature‘s new EP, You Shouldn’t Have To Shout So Loud.
Lou grew up around a wide range of music and even though his mother didn’t necessarily like the “cool” bands at the time, she was buying her son Led Zeppelin IV for Christmas just so he could have something “cool”.
This openness to all forms of music allowed Lou the luxury of absorbing so many sounds and influences over the years.
By the time he made it to Syracuse University, he was majoring in classical guitar. He then transferred to NYU and switched focus to theory and composition. He left NYU with a much deeper understanding of music as well as a Composer of the Year Award for an avant-garde piano piece.
Falling into the New York City music scene, Lou attended many concerts, made a lot of contacts, and eventually began rubbing elbows with some of his music idols.
Striking up a friendship with Spin Doctors’ drummer, Aaron Comess, Lou eventually asked Aaron to join him as a drummer in a new project. Not having enough time for another band, Aaron decided he would assist Mr. Barlow by producing his Feels Like Curtains EP.
Comess also played drums on the record and brought in legendary guitarist Gerry Leonard (from David Bowie’s band) and legendary bassist Tony Levin to add their musicianship to the EP.
To Lou’s surprise, this all star line-up came back to work on the new EP, You Shouldn’t Have To Shout So Loud.
The result is nothing short of great music. I hear a lot of rock music but rarely is it this polished, this refined, this good.
This is U2, Foo Fighters, Pearl Jam, and George Harrison all rolled up into one package.
