Mark Baughman is a master craftsman. He started playing at age 12, performing at 13, and has released multiple rock operas and musicals in addition to two independently produced albums.
No Prophet Here is one of the recent additions to Mark Baughman’s Working Theory’s impressive and growing catalog. Telling the story of two damaged people who need each other but constantly find themselves separated, No Prophet Here takes listeners through an engaging story backed by a sound bed that rides the waves between alternative, progressive, and theatrical blues rock.
The musicianship and vocal performances are top notch. The mix is clear, crisp, and does a wonderful job of letting each piece stand out and be heard. With memorable, engaging melodies, potent storytelling and top notch song crafting, No Prophet Here will keep listeners hooked from beginning to end.
Always one to give credit where credit is due, allow me to highlight the talented musicians and performers who contributed to this project. First up, Mark Baughman played guitars, bass, electronic instruments and simple keys. Drums are provided by Brian Petry, keyboards by Marco Cremaschini, and saxophone by Jeff Miguel. On the songs Somebody’s Daughter and What I Became, we are blessed with the vocal styling of Mella Barnes. About Mella’s contribution, Mark mentions, “Mella managed to capture the emotion and the wit just perfectly to my ears.” Make sure to check out these tracks.
In reference to the high quality mixing and mastering, Robert Venable in Nashville added his sonic touch to the final product. And while I’m dropping location names, this album and its contributors do not reside in any one location. No Prophet Here brings together influences and talent from Louisiana, Italy, New York, and Washington DC.
One of my favorite moments in the album is the soaring and roaring guitar solo that kicks off at 3:05 in the song Racing To the Bottom! Make sure you grab your air guitar for this one….WHEW!
Needless to say at this point, I’m a fan. This album RAWKS! I’m also partial to concept albums, musicals, and anything that has deeper meaning or tells a great story!
