Private Victories – Baby Love
Private Victories is the recording moniker of musician and songwriter Grant Carey. The self-titled debut album was recorded in the summer and fall of 2015. Private Victories weaves together Carey’s personal songwriting with a hifi-meets-lofi production aesthetic. Often matching the emotional highs and lows of each song, Carey’s vast vocal range calls to mind singers like Anohni, James Blake, or Devon Welsh of Majical Cloudz. Spanning several different genres and styles, Private Victories is glued together by a central theme: healing.
In early 2015, amidst a separation from his longtime college girlfriend, Carey suffered a devastating neck injury that saw him begin to battle constant feelings of dizziness, anxiety, pain and fatigue. Naturally, Grant turned to music during this difficult time. During the summer of 2015, he immersed himself in daily marathon solo recording sessions in his family’s basement in Pittsburgh. This cathartic period of recording and writing has led to some of his most honest, bare, and visceral songwriting to date.
