Tidal Sound, the newest album from Blue Eyed Sun, is infectious and full of wisdom.
Brennan Leeds, Kenneth Fox, and Casey Batterbee are Blue Eyed Sun.
At age 14, Brennan released a duet album. Four-time Grammy winning producer Michael Omartian dubbed him “the next Paul Simon”.
At age 16, Kenneth had written and self produced his own solo album.
During his younger teenage years, Casey studied jazz with Bill Sears (you know…the guy that worked with Ray Charles and Dizzie Gillespie).
This trio, from different backgrounds and locations, came together at Interlochen Arts Academy outside Traverse City, Michigan. For lack of a better cliche, this union “was meant to be”. Their connection…instantaneous.
“We met up one Sunday in a cluttered percussion room on campus. There were marimbas and drumsticks everywhere. We started running through tunes and we just knew it was something special,” Brennan recalls.
Four months later they had written 25 songs. The album, Tidal Sound, includes 10 of those 25.
I could tell you how great the album sounds, but (instead) let me show you what these more important people have thought about Blue Eyed Sun:
Grammy Award-winning producer/songwriter Michael Omartian enthuses: “These boys create real music, just like we used to in the old days.”

Two-time Grammy Award-winning engineer David Hall says: “This was such a fun project to work on; it sounds really good.”
One sec, I’m not finished yet…
Esteemed tastemaker Cliff Goldmacher gushes: “This album is beautifully done, sonically gorgeous, it’s truly exceptional.”
Oh wait.. I found another one.
Amber Buist of Village Travel and Events of Michigan says: “The vocals, the hook-laden writing, the instrumentation. Amazing.”
These cats are young but their shamanistic wisdom will make you think they traveled here from another place to deliver this sonically appetizing feast.
They produced Tidal Sound themselves bunking up at Halohorn Studios during January 2013 of Michigan’s not so nice winter.
“While we were recording, we had to sleep in the studio because it would be too logistically complicated to go back to campus,” Kenneth recalls. “I remember we lied there on these dinky old beds, and stared into the darkness and talked about the future, and how awesome it would be if we could keep playing, and we could keep doing what we loved.”
The tracks were sent down to Nashville for mixing at Blackbird Pro Studios. Those duties were handled by two-time Grammy winner David Hall (Frank Sinatra, Quincy Jones, Kenny Chesney). It was mastered by Benny Quinn (Merle Haggard, Lady Antebellum).
Don’t deny you want a copy of the album. After you grab it, go connect with the guys on Facebook or Twitter.
