Are you feeling down? Need some choice music to wake you from your stupor? Sonya Jevette has your remedy . This Singer/Songwriter pumps out music that is as inspiring as mesmerizing. If you’re in the market for a unique, powerful sound, look no further.
I’ll admit I thought writing a review on Sonya would be an easy task because there are so many good things to say, but how do you summarize an artist like her? With so many influences and wide range of sounds, it’s not as easy as I thought.
Sonya grew up in Dallas jamming to R&B hits and developing her singing talent in the church choir. She has won numerous competitions and was nominated in the Dallas Observer 2002 along with Erykah Badu and N’Dambi. She is so cool the former mayor of Austin, TX designated a day just for her! I had the pleasure of meeting her in a Google Hangout not too long ago. You could feel the energy through the screen when she would play, and the lady’s rhythm is amazing.
The native Texan takes a blend of her smooth, rich vocals and pairs it with the blues and jazz influences of her guitar to make something truly spectacular. She can get you up and dancin’ with her songs like “Jevette” which is a jazzy groove that tells you a little bit about herself. Or she’ll floor you using her heartfelt melodies like in “Whenever Your Around”. She takes you down a whole new road in the tune “Big Girls”, with its growling horn section and bluesy guitar riffs (might I add she don’t mind gettin’ down to the point on the lyrical side, but hey, she’s right). There isn’t a light in the spectrum she can’t shine.
The Dallas Hard Rock Cafe and Ft. Worth Caravan of Dreams are just a couple of the select venues that have been graced by her presence.

Sonya also is well immersed in the business aspect of music as well. She runs her own Indie label named Sound Byte Productions.

When it comes down to it, Sonya stands out from the crowd because her passion for music bleeds through her and is relayed to the listener. No matter which tune you hear, it’s guaranteed to be stuck in your head. And with a voice like her’s, that is alright with me.
