Let’s start from the beginning. Who are you? Where are you from? What style of music do you create?
My name is Stevie Jewel and that is my given name. Born in Canada, but moved to Atlanta when I was 2, lived in Vegas and LA and recently moved to Nashville. I had a song go to #24 on the Billboard charts (Dance) but I took some time off to think about my direction – I guess like Kelly Clarkson, I feel that Pop/Country is more my personal style. I have read that my style isn’t really “country”, but I was born on a farm, I can ride a horse bareback – that’s pretty “country” in anyone’s book
What challenges do you face being a singer/songwriter in Nashville?
None come to mind. I love Nashville and find the community of musicians here to be friendly and welcoming!
When did you decide music was the path you wanted to walk? Was there an “ah-ha” moment?
my “ah-ha” moment was at 2 years old when I sat all the family members down to watch me perform…..I made the fireplace hearth in our house my “stage”!
Who or what influenced you when you were younger? What influences you now?
My maternal grandmother introduced me to classic musical movies like My Fair Lady, The Sound of Music, Kiss Me Kate. One of the most influential stars of my childhood was Shirley Temple! I absolutely loved her movies, still do. An artist that has influenced me from childhood and still continues to is Barbra Streisand. The iconic style of the late 50’s and 60’s is really where I take cues about culture, and my personal style, even though my music isn’t particularly reflective of that era.
Do you have any favorite musicians, producers, or writers you enjoy working with? Where do you record?
I’ve had the opportunity to perform with several talented artists and musicians, but one of my favorite experiences was doing a small concert with Frank Sinatra’s musical director Vince Falcone. I’ve worked with several different producers, but two that I most recently had the great pleasure of working with was “Mama” Jan Smith and Blue Hamilton, both are extraordinarily talented musicians but are also wonderful people and working with them was simply a joy.
What role is the Internet/social media playing in helping you promote your music and connect with fans? Have you had to overcome any specific challenges?
I love how the internet has brought me closer to my fans. Through YouTube I’m able to grow my fan base and stay connected with them in ways that were previously not possible. My fans are so wonderful and being able to share new content with them on a regular basis is so much fun!
Do you actively gig? Tour? Where can we see you perform?
I just moved to Nashville and I’m in the process of preparing for band rehearsals! To stay updated on my gigs and tour information you can always find out the latest on my Twitter or Facebook page.
Where can we grab your album? Where can we connect with you online?
My newest single is on iTunes and my next two singles will be available there shortly! You can always connect with me on Twitter or Facebook, I love chatting with fans! Also on YouTube, I try to respond to every comment I get!
Any last thoughts? Shout outs?
I have to thank my Mum for always believing in me, my goals, and my dreams. She is the best person I know! I also have to thank my older siblings for their understanding, our Mum devotes a lot of time to my career and they are also so supportive!
