In this interview, we chat with prog/psych/art rockers Sounds Like An Infection discussing their newest project, influences and more.
Full Q&A and a stream to their self-titled album are below.
Let’s dive a little deeper into You, the artist and your music. What attracted you to this genre(s) or style(s)?
I think we didn’t try so hard to stick to a certain genre. In fact that was the last thing we wanted to do. I think the music that we listen to attributes a lot towards what our style is and we listen to all kinds of music, from Pink floyd to Lamb of God. Then there is of course old school blues and jazz. We enjoy middle eastern music and some electronic music as well. So I guess what we tried to do with Sounds Like an Infection was to blend all these sounds in together.
How long have you been creating and sharing your music with the public? Who or what influences your playing and/or writing? Also, what motivates you to keep going?
Well we’ve been playing together for quite a while. All of us in the band are childhood friends and we have a unique musical chemistry with each other. Even though we’ve been performing live for quite a while, we’ve been sharing our recordings quite recently, ever since the SLI project started, which was around September 2015. In terms of what keeps us going, I guess its the passion. And I guess with me, personally, my mood really influences my playing. I tend to write darker stuff when I’m feeling down.
Were you trying to accomplish anything specific on this new project? Creatively or otherwise?
Well our debut album was an experimental one. It mostly consisted of instrumentals but with this new one we’re probably going to be having more vocal oriented tracks. We’re still in the early stages of writing and currently the music we are writing is turning out to be even more experimental than our last recording effort. There are more time signature changes and we’re planning on making it a darker and a more heavier record than the last album.
What was the last song you listened to?
I’m not sure about the song but it was from Radiohead’s new album entitled, A Moon Shaped Pool.
Which do you prefer? Vinyl? CDs? MP3s?
VInyl all the way.
How about this one…. Do you prefer Spotify? Apple Music? Bandcamp? Or something else? Why?
We prefer any medium that allows free streams and downloads to our music. Although our debut album is on Apple music, we encourage our listeners to stream or download the album because we didn’t get into this to make money. We do it because we love doing it.
Other than the digital era overwhelming us with access to an abundance of music, what are one or two of the biggest challenges you face when trying to attract listeners to your music?
Well, I believe that the digital era has allowed independent artists such as ourselves to really get the music out there. That’s a big plus point. However, there is a lot of material, too much material online I believe and as a result the it takes time for the artists music to really pick up in terms of popularity.
Where is the best place to connect with you online? Discover more of your music?
Soundcloud, bandcamp, spotify, youtube. Whichever medium suits our listeners is alright with us.
Any last thoughts? Shout outs? Words of wisdom?
Uhhhhh no.
