So I’m sitting here in the media center of Local Community College, listening to “Chapters” while I write.
So far, I’ve listened to this release about five times all the way through. And each time I listen, just for a fleeting moment I’m reminded of that night in 1976 where I had bravely eaten something small and purple. Somewhere in that strange night, our host put on a recording by “Tangerine Dream” called “Rubycon.”
But I digress.
SmiteMatter, also known as David A. Israel, began making music in 2009 with iPod Touch. He then moved up to an iPad. His first album of Ambient Electronic music, “Technopolis Lost,” was released in October 2011, on FatelessFlows Records. February 24, 2014, saw SmiteMatter’s second release with the personal and introspective “Chapters,” released on the Apptronica label. Notes from SmiteMatter’s website announcing the release of “Chapters,” state the following, “’Chapters’ is a collection of songs inspired by the artist’s most vivid memories throughout his life…”
What I find really cool about SmiteMatter and a number of other musicians like him is that he composes all his music on iPads, using iOS apps. I asked him what his favorite tool was and he immediately replied “…the iPad.” Upon further enquiry I found out that, at least in the case of “Chapters,” he used such iOS apps as Addictive Synth, Nave, and Thor.
Picky, picky, picky. My only serious beef is that the music does not flow from one song into the next without a gap between them. But there is so much else to “Chapters,” like a serious dreamlike quality to much of the music. The artist takes his time and doesn’t rush to overwhelm. SmiteMatter seems to be continually improving his craft. What can the future hold?
