The LA space-rock quintet Sleeptalk (often stylized as SLPTVLK) has released a new music for their single “Bones.”
The video premiered with Buzzbands.LA and comes from the group’s EP Young, the second installment in a planned trilogy of releases. In an attempt to convey the idea of getting lost in your own mind, SLPTVLK chose hazy California aesthetics to get across the emotions the song speaks about. The video was shot at Point Dume Beach and Valley Relics Museum in the San Fernando Valley.
In this interview, we spend a few minutes discussing influences, challenges, the new project, and more.
Full Q&A, links, and the video for “Bones” below.
Let’s dive a little deeper into You, the artist and your music. What attracted you to this genre(s) or style(s)?
Myself (Anthony) I listen to so many different styles of music, but I am very passionate about pop-punk and ambient music. My favorite band growing up and still to this day is Blink 182. My oldest brother who is also in the band (Jason/Guitarist) introduced me to Blink when I was about 7 or 8 years old and I have listened to them since. Growing up I got really into experimental music such as groups like Angels and Airwaves, tyco, explosions in the sky etc and that’s kinda where this band came about.
What led you into this journey with music? And further, what drives you to push it out to the public?
Myself and our bass player Paul were in a band called Like Giants prior to Sleeptalk. It was a pop-rock band that grew extremely fast in the Los Angeles scene. We were the only band out here that wasn’t playing hardcore music and people really enjoyed our style. We were apart of a few sold out shows at venues such as The Key Club, The Roxy and The Troubadour. We also played on the Ernie Ball stage at Warped Tour a few years back. Anyways, that band came to a stop sometime in 2012, and at that time a band called The 1975 came out and they released a few EP’s that I absolutely fell in love with. The ambiance of the electronic songs and the catchy melodies really stuck with me. So myself and Paul started messing around with electronic styled music in 2013 which led us up to the beginning stages of Sleeptalk in 2014.
Who or what influences your creativity? Have your tastes in music changed over time?
My life is all the influence I need in creativity. All of our music is super personal to me. If you listen to my lyrics, you can tell that its not faked or forced. Everything kinda just flows for me, and I feel like that comes from the lifestyle that I live.
Were you trying to accomplish anything specific on this new project? Creatively or otherwise?
Honestly I just try connecting with people on the same spectrum I am connected to music. I can tell you every single place i was the first time listening to all of my favorite bands new albums for the first time. I can tell you how I felt at that moment and how I felt the first and last time I have seen them live. I think that’s most important part is connecting with the people that are listening to your music on that level.
What was the last song you listened to?
At this moment I am actually listening to the full album “In Return” by Odesza.
Which do you prefer? Vinyl? CDs? MP3s?
There is nothing like the physical copy of an album. I love going out and buying bands albums or vinyls rather than buying MP3’s.
The last 4 albums I bought I actually bought packages deal that came with all of the above.
1. The 1975 – I like it when you sleep
2. Blink 182 – California
3. Moose Blood -Blush
4. Wolf Alice – My Love is Cool
How about this one…. Do you prefer Spotify? Apple Music? Bandcamp? Or something else? Why?
Apple Music for sure. I feel like they are actually paying artist somewhat. I wish record stores were still around though. There is nothing like going and buying a psychical record from your local Tower Records.
Other than the digital era overwhelming us with access to an abundance of music, what is the biggest challenge you face when trying to connect with or find new fans?
Hoping they actually listen to your music, hahah.
Where is the best place to connect with you online? Discover more music?
Our website actually has links to all of our social media outlets, but I think twitter or instagram. If i had to choose between those two, I would choose instagram because I feel that we are a visual styled band. If you want to get to know us I think that’s your best bet. Links are below <3
