Suffolk folk quartet Rusty Boxx set to release debut EP titled “Scattered Keeses” March 31, 2014, on Oh Mercy! Records.
Though they haven’t been playing together long as an “established” group, these guys have a lot of potential in the folk world. There are some real high notes on this release, limited though it is as there are only 4 tracks. The EP starts off with ‘Must Be For You’ and you can hear some beautiful harmonies blend in throughout the song. It may seem that it is a bit slow at the beginning, but the tempo picks up and you will catch yourself tapping your toes along with the song.
The next tune called ‘Fortitude’ is a bit slower but it works and it keeps with the feel of the EP which is classically folk. Then we come to ‘Boy By the River’. Along with the lead vocals, there’s some nice finger picking going on between guitar and banjo. And the harmonies aren’t in the background and buried, but are just a bit to the side of center stage with the lead vocals, and nicely done.
Finally we round it out with ‘Wall of Fans’, which may just be the best song on the EP. A line in the chorus says “Nothing you say ever goes unnoticed” which is a beautiful sentiment. It reaches out and kind of draws you in because everyone wants to hear those words and experience that feeling.
Overall, this is a really good EP and a good start for a new group. It should be a fun, interesting ride to see how they develop and hone their sound over time.
