Primo Nelz, one of the 1st Class Movement artists has a voice and style that are undeniable. He’ll be playing the Artists in the Plus Online Festival this September, and we want to thank him for taking the time to get with us in our interview series… check this DatPiff artist out while you give him a read.
Let’s start at the beginning. Tell us a little about yourself. how and when did you start making music?
Well first and foremost my name is Darnell but I’m mostly known by my stage name Primo Nellz. I’m from a small town named Smyrna in a small state which is Delaware. I started taking music seriously when i reached my senior year in college. I found that writing out my thoughts to a beat was the best form of therapy for me. I used to be in my dorm room all night writing lyrics in between classes and basketball practice. When I realized that my peers respected my talents thats when I decided to pursue music full-time.
Why do you do it, now?
The reason I do it now is because I have invested so much blood, sweat, and tears that if I were to stop I couldn’t live with the regret of what possibly could’ve happened or where music could of taken me.
What were some of your early influences and what inspires you today?
Growing up as a child in my household, I was always having music (generally hip-hop) played around me so without even knowing it I was always being receptive to it. Also my father was in a rap group in his earlier years so I believe the talent itself is hereditary.
What was the last song you listened to (disc in the car or what-not)?
I listen to Pandora radio a lot throughout the day which randomly plays songs and artists related to your personal preference and the last song I listened to was Drake’s “Started From The Bottom.”
How did you connect with Artists in the Plus and what attracted you to working with them?
I actually received a message via Facebook from John Voshell who is involved in the whole event and it struck me as an opportunity to progress and mature as an artist so I wanted to capitalize on that.
Last year’s festival was a huge success and changed a lot of things about music on the net. Were you a part of that?
Unfortunately, I wasnt a part of that but I’m glad that this year I will be able to witness it firsthand.
What would you like to see as a result of the festival, this year?
I would just love to see the artists come together and connect with each other while delivering the best music.
Have you been using services like Hangouts On Air, U-Stream, Street-Jelly, or others to perform live via video on line? What kind of reaction are you getting?
I haven’t been using these services to perform online but I believe its something I will be doing in the near future.
Village Studios in LA will be hosting the festival, this year and there will be a studio stage in North Carolina and another in Norway. Will you be travelling or performing remote from your own studio?
I will be traveling to Los Angeles from Delaware to perform.
If you could ask one performer to join you on a record, who would it be?
If I could ask one artist to join me on a record it would be Wiz Khalifa.
What one thing would you change about this world, if you could?
One thing I would change about this world is the fact that some people can be filthy rich while others barely have enough to survive. I believe that is morally incorrect.
