Guitarist, pianist and songwriter Matt Hutson and bassist Gary Schrader joined forces as Outerfield after a series of jam sessions. Once their musical chemistry had proven itself, the duo set out to create a full length album that would challenge all the “rules” of rock and roll music.
Pleasant Grove Hotel is the result and is now available! Some insight from the album’s creators follows,
The album is about the space it takes to put your life back together after everything has fallen apart. Not unlike the experience of making the record, which was shelved for four months and expected to never come out.”
Outerfield on their new album, Pleasant Grove Hotel
Rewinding just a little for some history on the formation of this album…
Gary is a music veteran having played in a list of local bands as guitarist and bassist. He originally teamed up with Jon Auer of the Posies to create an album. It was shelved for months and the songs abandoned.
After those months passed, Gary teamed up with Matt. They began looking at the abandoned songs and decided to assemble the pieces into the full length record Gary originally set out to create.
With this back story in mind, Pleasant Grove Hotel definitely stands as a distinctive sounding rock record. Combining elements of alternative, noise and art rock, Outerfield have developed a uniquely satisfying blend of sounds that culminate into the 11 songs on the album.
Great thing Gary and Matt chose not to abandon this project! I’m happy to be sharing it with you.
