Moonlight Zoo return with their forthcoming single Melting out on 4th November 2016 via Spinnup.
Melting is bursting with catchy melodies, upbeat rhythms and exuberant lyrics condensed into one joyous and uplifting pop single.
Moonlight Zoo formed in late 2014 and have wasted no time in spreading their infectious indie pop to the masses. Since their inception, the band have cut their teeth busking around the streets of Europe, followed by headline shows throughout Scotland. They made their live television debut on The Riverside Show on STV and were subsequently booked to headline Glasgow’s King Tuts Wah Wah Hut.
In this interview spotlight, we chat with the band about their newest single, challenges in the digital age, influences and more.
Q&A along with links and a stream of Melting below.
Let’s dive a little deeper into You, the artist and your music. What attracted you to this genre(s) or style(s)?
We really like music that makes you nod your head, so when we started to put songs together we would always record it & if it made us nod our heads it passed the test. When it came to the vocals we couldnt settle on who was going to be the lead singer, and because we all loved bands like The Beatles & ABBA we decided to just sing together all the time – using our three part harmonies to make the melody stronger & words seem bigger.
How long have you been creating and sharing your music with the public?
Winter 2014 we put our first demos online.
Who or what influences your playing and/or writing? Also, what motivates you to keep going?
We all really like going to gigs and seeing other bands play live – nothing else gets your chops up like watching other great musicians playing! We all absolutely love what we do so we are always pretty motivated.
Were you trying to accomplish anything specific on this new project? Creatively or otherwise?
We all have pretty diverse musical tastes so setting out to try and be a certain type of band& writing a certain type of song would really have been impossible. The song just kind of happened organically in the practice room, like everything we do.
What was the last song you listened to?
Fleetwood Mac – Second Hand News
Which do you prefer? Vinyl? CDs? MP3s?
We tend to prefer Vinyl and CDs. It just feels like you actually own the music more because you can physically hold it in your hand, and right now with streaming being the new way to consume music i think that is pretty special – its more personal & feels like you actually own & more connected to the music.
How about this one…. Do you prefer Spotify? Apple Music? Bandcamp? Or something else? Why?
Spotify seems to be the most user friendly as far as streaming services go, and the playlists are a great way to discover new artists, as well as be discovered. Bandcamp has to come out on top however as its the best way for bands to actually sell & package their music independently, as you don’t need to use a digital distribution service & your connecting directly with your audience.
Other than the digital era overwhelming us with access to an abundance of music, what are one or two of the biggest challenges you face when trying to attract listeners to your music?
The amount of choice available is really the only major obstacle, which is obviously great as their is now so much amazing new music available at your fingertips, but it can make it hard to stand out & your sound can get lost in all the noise.
Do you gig, tour or perform? Do you ever live stream? Where can music lovers see you live?
We gig and tour regularly in venues across the UK, We always really love coming back to our hometown to play a show because its always absolutely nuts and every time its a sold out crowd! We played some major festivals this summer including isle of wight festival which was really one of the highlights of the year, but we can’t help loving getting up close and personal with the audience in a small sweaty room.
Where is the best place to connect with you online? Discover more of your music?
Facebook and twitter is the best place to connect with the band. Youtube and Spotify to listen to our music.
