I hit up Al-D the other day to ask how the Meant For the Milk Crate show went.
After going back and forth a minute, I asked him to type up a summary.
Here it is:
The show went great! The night started off with my boy DJ Mattatat playing some classic hip hop joints while the crowd gathered. The Boom Bap’s DJ Rate took over the turntables as the live portion of the show got started and he held us down for most of the rest of the night.
The live part of the show got started with my boy Nam White kicking some of my favorite joints of his. After that, we had a quick surprise guest appearance from my boy E.T. E.T. also kicked a verse on my set when I went on after him. That was a joint off the Vitamin D mixtape – which is available to download free. E.T. and I are also doing a Kentucky showcase with D.O.U.G.H. (Nashville by way of Paducah), Father Jah (Louisville), and Basement Up (Lexington) at Sound Therapy on March 16th at Sports Page – 419 Union Street (flier attached).
The energy at Meant for the Milk Crate! continued to step up when Ducko Mcfli brought a couple other members of the PUSH crew through to rock a surprise set. That would be Sofa Brown – who just dropped a really dope new project – and Evan Blocker.
After that, Gummy Soul got busy with some classic material. If you don’t know, Gummy Soul consists of Kurtis Stanley, Amerigo Gazeway, and Wally Clark. In my book, they have been setting the standard for Nashville hip hop for a while. Finally, Ducko McFli got on the mic and delivered a solid performance along with DJ Rjae.
First, he kicked a couple familiar joints. Then, he brought out S.T.A.N. – who just dropped a video that has gotten a lot of attention over the last couple weeks. Ducko also premiered a brand new song that was absolutely off the hook! I am looking forward to the release of his next project “Return of the Real” in May. DJ Rate kept the music going in between sets and shut down the party playing a mix of national and local hip hop. Michelle Barbero came out at took some great pictures.
I really appreciate all of the artists and DJs and everyone else who was involved with “Meant for the Milk Crate!”. In my opinion, these are some of the best hip hop artists coming out of Nashville right now and I look forward to working with all of them in the future. In the near-term, I am working on my next mixtape and the second edition of a dance party I did last year called “The Milkshake”. I am also working on a project with a live band, but we have only gotten together to practice and work out material once – so it will be a while before we perform. I also want to big up Middle Tennessee Hip Hop for all the support and say thanks for checking in about the show.
