As I look at our collection of Shel Silverstein books on my kids’ bookshelf, I find myself watching the debut video and listening to the debut single of Matthew De Ver; who happens to be Silverstein’s son.
The Gift & The Wound is the first single and visual treatment from Matthew De Ver‘s forthcoming album titled Surface Tension (A Tincture for Integrating Shadow). The album explores themes that Matthew has been avoiding since his teenage years. His father died when he was only 15 and then he watched his mom fall into alcoholism but (fortunately) also got to watch her recovery.
In Matthew’s words,
For a long time, I have run from the themes I explore on this album. Now, I’m ready to process these aspects of my life through art.”
The Gift & The Wound is a downtempo, atmospheric, chill vibes track featuring the poetically-infused flow of Matthew’s confident delivery. Having a way with words (just like dad), Matthew laces this jazzy sound bed with layers of meaning, symbols and the healthy processing of his more carefree teenage years.
The visual treatment places us front and center in Matthew De Ver‘s Wisconsin world blending urban imagery, nature imagery, and symbolism which is based on the elements: water, stone, wood and fire.
