Italian bassist Manuel Muzzu – M² has delivered his latest instrumental project titled New Stories – Old Hands, which is the follow up to his 2012 release The Right Hands Miracle.
Working with an all star cast of musicians, Manuel’s music is founded in his love for the bass guitar. Whether he is playing a 4, 5 or 6 stringer or using the instrument as a traditional bass or making it sound like something completely different, there is no denying Muzzu is a master of his craft; pushing his creativity and playing techniques to their limits.
Packed full of funk-infused, jazzy instrumentals New Stories Old Hands is an album you can thoroughly enjoy from beginning to end in a myriad of settings whether a late night vibing out after a stressful day or as the soundtrack for a long, relaxing drive or simply as danceable background as you clean or do other chores around the house.
Now that I’ve made it clear Manuel isn’t lacking in playing, arranging and composing abilities, the story does have an interesting, inspiring twist.
Muzzu’s proficiency did not come easily or without challenges. Due to a handicap with his right hand, Manuel was forced to create his own technique for playing bass in order to follow his passion for the instrument. Limited by the lack of fully functioning fingers, Manuel flipped the script and turned this limitation into an opportunity for breaking the mold and pushing the traditions of bass playing techniques into unfamiliar but very impressive territory.
With this in mind, the music heard on New Stories Old Hands takes on an entirely new depth of meaning. It also adds a little more potency to the album title.
If you want to see how Manuel has adapted his inability into an amazing ability, he shows some of his secrets on YouTube.
