London based alternative pop outfit Magazine Gap have delivered an alternative pop album that came together as a result of its members engaging in a journey of discovery and experimentation.
The result is not simply an alt-pop record, but an alt-pop record that blends various forms of pop with a little bit of folk rock, some sprinkles of Hip Hop, a dash of reggae bounce, and a touch of soul blended and delivered by a team of creatives who are constantly evolving into more masterful song crafters.
What’s That About? is the band’s follow-up to their debut project, Light & Shade.
Whether you find your emotions stirring with the ballad In Two Minds, your mind dissecting the lyrics of the folk-rockin’ Jericho, your body moving to the party-esque grooves of Body Language, or you feel relaxed by the more tropical feeling, reggae bounce of Ran for Cover, What’s That About? is a well crafted pop album that is significantly more than a simple pop album.
To ensure the band didn’t fall into formulas, complacency or releasing songs that sounded similar to their previous project, the members challenged themselves (and each other) to push beyond their creative comfort zones approaching their process through different ways or writing, recording and performing. With the additional philosophy that there are no “throwaway tracks”, the band took extra care to tweak, disassemble and reassemble each song until it passed their quality control checks.
The result is an eclectic blend of pop music styles and a track list that is guaranteed to lift your mood, boost your energy and make your body move…on multiple occasions.
What’s That About? was recorded in (and around) London, mixed at Redbooth Recording Studios (Rochester, New York), and mastered by John Davis at Metropolis Studios in London.
Favorite track? I can’t pick just one but here are a few that stand out: Jericho, Body Language, Superficial and What’s That About?
