The latest release from Long Day Too Short, “Occupy” hit the desk today. It’s taken me a minute to get into it, but don’t let that scare you.
The first tune on the 5 song EP was – in my opinion and that of the gentleman sitting here with me – was a poor choice for the opener, or possibly the whole project. The vocal is out uf pitch just enough to be bothersome – on the flipside, at least it’s completely free of auto-tune. Sometimes an out of tune bit can be purposeful and pleasing, but this one is just too far off. Especially for a song that is, at it’s core as good as this one.
There is a similar problem with the guitar, and I’ve come to believe that a simple set-up of the instrument would fix it. When the guitar parts are “effected,” they are nice and fit very well, but in the clean ChiliPeppers-like sections, they are just not convincing.
Now my complaints stop there, with that one song. Guys I think you should have spent another day on it, and it would be great.
The rest of the disc pretty much kicks total butt! Good Morning America, My Drama, Proud of You, and Save the World are all good songs that explore some deep and dark topics, but avoid cliche. I’m thinking Save the World is my favorite of all. That scratchy record sound in the intro is a real nice touch, too.
There are too many good things going on with this record to let my assessment of the first song to throw you off, so go ahead and give it a spin. The great lyrics, cool arragements and use of space, and neat (but not over bearing effects) make this one a lot of fun to listen too.
While the arrangements get thick and sort of “polished” at points, they are also simple and don’t quite have that “finished LA studio” sound to them. I get the impression that this is done purposefully, to give the effect of what the 4 piece band would sound like at a live show. Regardless whether it’s intentional, it works for me.
In February 2011 Arman met Kevin Valenzuela at a rock show where Kevin played bass
for a local band. Kevin brought in his friend Jacob Fields to play drums and Naim Dehghany to play solo guitar.
The band shot their first promo video for their song “Amazing”( directed and edited by Irina Bychkova) and started playing shows around San Fernando Valley
in Los Angeles and are recording their first LP that is due in July 2011.
