A knack for beautifully engaging melodies and brightly lit, well composed soundscapes over an amalgamation of lyrically expressed adventures, emotions and feelings, Picture on the Wall by experimental, folk-rock leaning singer/songwriter Leopold Medley.
With history and experience as a filmmaker, something about the simple act of grabbing a keyboard and creating music seemed more practical and fulfilling. Having released a variety of songs digitally, Leopold has delivered his first full length album with Picture on the Wall.
Sometimes coming off a voyage fueled by psilocybin or sometimes simply riding the waves of daily life as they flowed, Leopold spent his recording sessions for the album rolling out of bed to his keyboard and computer, and creating whatever came.
I remember when I used to make music like that. Oh the magic. Oh the joy. Oh what years of life, having to pay increasingly expensive bills, and feeding 3 kids will do to you!
It’s his genuinely spontaneous, stream-of-consciousness method of music and song creation that I truly appreciate. As mentioned above, I miss the days of doing the same. You never know what will come out.
In the words of Leopold, Picture on the Wall,
PICTURE ON THE WALL is my attempt to process the trauma of youth and lost loved ones through highly emotional, vulnerable folk pop music. Of course I also use some songs to just ramble about whatever I want, like taking shrooms and just having fun. I’ve tried hard to maximize the emotional experience of the record while featuring interesting guitar, piano, vibraphone, and string tones, with laid-back reverby vocals.
Circling back to the aforementioned uplifting soundscapes and lovely melodies while taking the above quote into context, lyrically speaking the album does dive into darker, grittier, less than bright and uplifting emotional material.
However, this collection of 10 engaging, masterfully crafted melodic wonders delivers the less than happy content with some pizzazz, a little flair, and makes it easy to digest.
