On May 31, 1921 in Tulsa, Oklahoma something happened in an elevator that would spark a violent race riot in one of the most affluent black communities that existed in this country during that time. In the course of 24 hours, 35 city blocks turned to ash, 800 people injured, 300 dead, the interment of 6,000 people and 8 days under martial law of the National Guard which put the icing on this disastrous cake.
These stories are part of us whether we know them or not, and reconciling with the mountain of hurt we’ve inflicted and endured as a nation is the only way we can move toward healing. Nashville based singer/songwriter Kate Tucker teamed up with collaborator Kenny Childers to discuss, raise awareness, and explore the perspective of the people who might have been inside that Tulsa elevator in ’21.
If that isn’t enough depth in one song, Kate teamed up with Ben Scheer (founder of Scheerio) to include a VR experience that will accompany the single and album. Kate will also release more visual content to support the album. The official music video that is in the works for In Your Arms will include footage from the 1944 documentary The Negro Soldier.
In Your Arms comes backed by a solid groove reminiscent of ’90s alt-rock, guitars that add a bit of grit while maintaining a healthy level of pop appeal, and an infectious hook. The engaging combination of sounds, melodies and rhythm result in an enjoyable listening experience.
