To be completely transparent, the video for Weeds actually premiered at the Cucalorus Film Festival in Wilmington in November 2018. It was also screened at the 2018 Denver Underground Film Festival. It was in Denver where the video won First Runner Up for Best Stop-Motion Animated Short as well as Second Runner Up for Best Music Video!
Weeds really is something special and most definitely an outpouring of love and an undying passion to create something original, refreshing, distinct and painstakingly time consuming.
Frame-by-frame, for 2,069 frames, Justin Lacy spent an insane amount of time arranging bits of paper, sculpting with pipe cleaners, and laying out designs of yarn and cotton on panes of glass for his first effort at creating a stop-motion music video focused around music from his 2017 full-length album Control Burn.
Justin Lacy exudes the true essence of a DIY indie. A lyricist, arranger, composer and performer, this creative obviously has no problem taking the time and patience to create something so awesome. And he did so on his first attempt at stop-motion animation.
If you dig your indie folk with hints of Leonard Cohen or Tom Waits and a whole a lot of independent attitude, Justin Lacy has your fix.
