Yur Mum, a London-based Brazilian rock act signed to Chapter 22 Records in the UK and M&O Music in France, have released their new single, Tropical Fuzz. The band, formed of Anelise Kunz (bass/Vocals) and Fabio Couto (drums), who’ve shared the stage with DIY stalwarts such as Maid Of Ace, Svetlanas, Healthy Junkies, Hands Off Gretel, I-Destroy & Dream Nails as well as modern-day legends such as New Model Army, The Adolescents, Vice Squad, Kirk Brandon, UK Subs, The Vibrators and TV Smith, will also unleash an accompanying music video which was shot entirely on a GoPro & edited by the duo.
In this interview spotlight, I chat with Yur Mum about the latest music, adapting during a pandemic, technology and more.
Full Q&A along with links and music below.
Where are you from and how do You describe your style of music?
We are both from Brazil, but living in London for the past 12 years. As for our sound, we mix and match a lot, but its essence is Rock.
How did you get here? As in, what inspired or motivated you to take on this journey through music and the music biz?
By Plane. (jokes) We were always involved with music back home and/or other forms of art. When we moved to London that part of us was dormant. After a few nights talking music with our friend Gabriel Ralls, we then started a band called Plastique. After a few years and 2 albums we felt like going back to our roots, something closer to what got us in the musical journey in the first place so this is when Yur Mum was born. It was never the money (as we know there isn’t any until someone decides you are worthy) and it isn’t for the fame (because we do not care about it), we are in this biz for ourselves and ourselves only.
How does your latest project compare/contrast with your previous release(s)? Were you setting out to accomplish anything specific, follow a specific theme, or explore different styles of creation?
The biggest contrast is not having a guitar. We are now a duo comprised of Bass and Drums. From this change came the freedom to create something outside of the Rock’n Roll mould. With this change came the freedom to create whatever the heck we felt like.
Name the biggest challenge you faced as a creative during these unprecedented? How did you adapt? How have you kept the creative fires burning during all this?
As mentioned above, the biggest change was becoming a duo, and with that change we faced the challenge of not losing in sound even though we are losing 1 instrument. Creating new songs was the best remedy, and we came out of that period with our second album Tropical Fuzz.
What was the last song you listened to?
Fabio – Government Trash by Death From Above 1979
Ane – How Soon is Now? The Smiths
Which do you prefer? Vinyl? 8-tracks? Cassettes? CDs? MP3s? Streaming platforms?
Vinyl has had a great come back and we’ve got hooked on it too. The feeling of holding it, reading and looking at the artwork is very satisfying, and addictive too. So we would say Vinyl for its beauty and Streaming for its practicality whilst on the road.
