Indie Pop & Rnb artist Yutao never felt at ease in China where he was born—he always longed for ideals he felt were embodied by Western culture. When he finally came to the States, he tried to stay true to his tradition, and infused his native Eastern culture with Western culture.
He just released his latest song, the lofi and R&B “We Talk No More.” The emotionally charged song is about how sometimes your mind and body are not aligned. For Yutao, music is one way he communicates and express his emotions clearly.
In this interview spotlight, I chat with Yutao about choosing a favorite song of all time, dream collabls, and more.

What can you share with readers about your new project?
The new song is to explore the topic of lost conversation.
There are many conversations from the past that I never responded to at that moment because I didn’t know how to, and after years, I finally know how to react to them, but that conversation has already expired. So, I produced this song to memorize those conversations.
How does this project compare with your other projects you had in the past?
For this release and the past release, “I GUESS”, both releases focus more on the R&B route, while the rest focus on the pop side.
What about this project makes you most proud? Was there a specific goal you were trying to accomplish with this release?
What makes me proud of this project is the production, and with every release, I always try to implement new techniques in terms of music production. This release is a summary of that.
What inspires you to create music? What motivates you to keep going?
I make music to heal my soul, and I remember people commenting and thanking me for how my music helps them through the challenging period; it makes me realize you can make an impact via music. I found it very powerful and poetic that people can feel your feelings.
If you could collaborate with anyone – dead or alive, famous or unknown – who would it be and why? If it’s an indie/DIY artist, please include a link so readers can check them out.

Where is the best place to find you and stay connected?
I really appreciate your time. Is there anything you’d like to share before we sign off?
I am preparing a new series called “Every 23/2023”.
I plan to release a single every month 23 from April to the end of the year to explore a topic each month and turn that into a song. I will also document the production journey in vlog format along the way.
