Teebo has released his new single “Liquor”. The track was written in NYC and is an intimate take on relationships and how two people who just met can enter a very deep state of mind and spirit; questioning boundaries and barriers that we put on in relationships. Like good liquor lyrics and the music flow smoothly, adding a sensual tone to the song. The inspiration behind “Liquor” is Teebo’s difficult times finding a home and the loss of both his grandmother and father. “I see it as a tropical, flowery anthem that celebrates differences and freedom.”
In this interview spotlight, I chat with Teebo about the new release, challenges, motivations and more.
Full Q&A along with links and music below.
Where are you from and what style of music do you create? (In your own words, not necessarily in marketing terms or by popular genre classifications.)
I’m from France but grew up in London. I create pop music mixing it with electro. I’m also inspired by ethnic music.
What led you down this path of music and what motivates you to keep going?
I come from a dance background, music came to me from hanging out in the jazz jams in London. I tried a few things, wrote a few songs and quickly started recording.
Music has always be healing to me, rather in dance or in producing or singing. It’s a very moving art that adapts to all forms of life. That’s what keep me going: the fact that it’s ever-changing. There’s so much to do and live for with music.
How does “Liquor” differ from your previous release, “Princess Is Going To Die”? Were you trying to accomplish anything specific?
“Princess is Gonna Die” was a very complex song to write and produce, it has lots of different sounds and genres mixed together. Liquor came to my life at a time I needed an intense clean up and make songs that directed straight from my heart to the public.
Name one or two challenges you face as an indie musician in this oversaturated, digital music age? How has technology helped you (since we know it does help)?
The biggest challenge to me is to stay up to date on the socials. Since I’m a very private person, that’s my biggest challenge, yet I’m very inspired by how fast the industry moves and new technologies are a blessing to performance arts. New techs give us easiest ways to produce, publish and distribute music.
What was the last song you listened to?
Tempo by Lizzo, Featuring Missy Elliott. I’m obsessed with it right now.
Which do you prefer? Vinyl? CDs? MP3s?
Definitely Vinyls! Even tho I stream music a lot!
How about this one…. Do you prefer Spotify? Apple Music? Bandcamp? Or something else? Why?
I’ve been with Tidal since they created the company, mostly for the interface and the rate they pay to the artists. I also have subscribed to Spotify to stream music on my Google Home.
Where is the best place to connect with you online and discover more music?
Definitely Instagram, I like to post videos of the new sounds I’m making.
