Interview with Noah James Hittner – musician, author, and inspiration

Singer/songwriter, musician and author Noah James Hittner recently came across our radar. After checking out his album Flesh & Metal and learning about several books he has published, I decided it was time to ask Noah some questions so we could learn more about this multi-talented artist.

You’re on a mission to connect with the lives of as many people as possible in an inspiring and empowering way. What inspired you to pursue this mission?

I enjoy connecting with people in meaningful ways. I love to feel inspired, and I love inspiring people even more. I think maybe if more people began acting on their inspiration(s) we would be living in a much more wholesome time, a much more forgiving time, and a much more empathetic time less driven by fear and greed.

You are a published author as well as a musician. Which came first, the writing or the music? Tell us about your books.

The books came first, despite the fact that my mom was in two bands while I was growing up and I was surrounded and saturated by music. I’ve written three books on the topic of human consciousness, spirituality and personal freedom. Currently I’m working on a fourth book (my first novel). The story is an epic post-apocalyptic journey tale of love and friendship.

The music came not too long after. I’d wanted to learn how to play the guitar for about fifteen years, but had always been so intimidated by all of those strings and frets (I still am to an extent). I finally picked up the instrument at the very beginning of 2009 and haven’t put it down since. There is a magic and a solace I find while I’m playing that is so crucial to everything that I am, and everything I’m trying to become. Now, 6+ years in, I can barely remember my life before the guitar.

You’ve also worked in a variety of industries. How was the catastrophe insurance world? I used to work with roofing, siding and other residential building companies that couldn’t wait for tornado season to do it’s damage.. seems like a counter-productive business model.

Yeah, the catastrophe insurance world is a strange and ironic life whereby my livelihood was (and occasionally still is) determined by the demise of others. Ultimately, that irony is what led to me deciding not to do the work permanently, though I do still do it on a temporary basis when needed…gotta pay the bills

Tell us more about your appearances on TV? That’s pretty cool to have on your resume.

A few years back I was asked to appear on “The Balancing Act” airing on the Lifetime television network in order to be interviewed for my second book, “Beyond Victim and Villain.” After the show was taped, I passed out a bunch of my albums to the film crew. A few hours later, they called and asked if I’d like to do a musical segment as well. My friend and fellow musician, Topher McGill performed with me and, in one take, we recorded the song “A Vagabond’s Lullaby” from my first solo album “Thus Far”. Despite the fact that my vocals were a bit flat, I think it came out pretty well, and it was a HUGE experience to have under my belt. What should listeners expect when they listen to your album Flesh & Metal. Really cool title, by the way.

“Flesh and Metal” represents a very dark, yet hopeful period of my life. I think it’s funny how dark times seem to connect us, while the hope they generate simultaneously binds us together. It is my wish that the this album does just that. Essentially, I wanted “Flesh & Metal” to be everything I love about music. Thus, it contains elements of many genres, including: Folk, Acoustic Rock, Blues, R&B, Pop, and Electronica. I’ve dubbed the hodgepodge: “Acousti-Tronic”. I’m super proud of it, and really think it has a lot to offer for all of the music lovers out there.

I noticed you do private parties. Do you perform in other venues? Tour? Where can people see you live? How does one book you for a private event?

Yeah, the private, in-home concert idea was something I’d heard about and thought it sounded like a great idea. (Don’t wanna go out to a show? No problem! I’ll come to you!) Most of my performances are in cafes, pubs and farmers markets. I’m planning on putting together a tour in the future, but that has no official timeline yet.
