Marcus Brown of Austin, Texas is set to release his new album “All The Ghosts Are Gone” in February of 2015. When the opportunity came up for a brief interview, we seized the moment.
Let’s break the ice. Let readers know who you are. Where you are from. And what style of music you create.
I’m an Austin Texas boy who writes songs that seem to always end up being about love. Other subjects come up every once in a while…
The pervasive style on All The Ghosts Are Gone is acoustic guitar based pop.
You’re preparing to release your debut album. Why did you choose the name “All The Ghosts Are Gone”?
All The Ghosts Are Gone is also the name of the last song on the record. Its about this feeling of being free from your fears and limiting beliefs. Too often its a pretty fleeting feeling for me. The song is sort of an invocation of that sentiment, and making this record required a lot of that feeling. I suppose thats why I chose to name the record what I did.
I read you had no plans to release this album. Why not and what changed your mind?
Really, I had no intentions of recording an album at all. It wasn’t until my producer Keith Gary heard me play that plans were made. He’s become a great friend of mine through the process of making this record. If I hadn’t met Keith, this wouldn’t have happened.
With so much music in Austin, how do you stand out?
Austin is filled with really wonderful bands and artists, so it can be kinda difficult. I play in several bands around town, as does seemingly everyone. Playing my own songs around town is somewhat of a newish thing, but I’ve been blown away by the feedback I’ve received from live shows and listenings thus far. I just do my best to put everything I’ve got into every performance.
What was the last song you listened to?
Not counting demos of some new stuff I’m working on, I think it was “Jigsaw Falling Into Place” by everyone’s favorite band, Radiohead.
