In this interview we chat with experimental artist Digit+Stas about music, the newest single “Earthed“, and the challenges of being an indie musician during these digital times.
Full Q&A and a stream of “Earthed” is below.
We’ve featured you before but let’s dive a little deeper into the artist and the music. What attracted you to this genre or style of music?
It depends what style we’re referring too. I appreciate that music seems to conquer over a variety of barriers for most folks. No pacifism, just strong hold on ethics and ground rules. Experimentation is often prevalent in some genres, that’s awesome, and really exciting. I’m not sure what genre I’m part of, but lyrically I think people listen carefully whether they like it or not. So if content can relate and empower a person that is listening then ace.
Who or what influences your playing and/or writing? Also, what motivates you to keep going?
Mom.
Were you trying to accomplish anything specific on this new project? Creatively or otherwise?
Yea, everything I have to say is in the music. It’s an ongoing project. I think folks should never ever give up on themselves, the likelihood of being is very slim. So with this project, I’d like to remind people of that.
When music makes people discuss urgent issues, then I think it’s done right. It’s a drag that outrage often isn’t pretty…
What was the last song you listened to?
Does it count if it was playing on the overhead at a check out?
Which do you prefer? Vinyl? CDs? MP3s?
Vinyl for audio, CD for the pictures, MP3’s for the convenience.
How about this one…. Do you prefer Spotify? Apple Music? Bandcamp? Or something else? Why?
I guess Spotify because it reminds me of Pandora.
Other than the digital era overwhelming us with access to an abundance of music, what are one or two of the biggest challenges you face when trying to attract listeners to your music?
It’s intentionally raw, like garage rock once was, only in a new era when everything can be tweaked to perfection a the drop of a hat. My stuff clunks around and I think that’s confusing for some. Additionally, I feel like girl singers, people expect to sound a specific way.
Where is the best place to connect with you online? Discover more of your music?
We are also on Spotify.
