Phoenix-based indie-rock outfit, Ultraviolet Communication have released their much anticipated sophomore album Paper Tiger, flexing creative storytelling combined with sublime craftsmanship. With the help of recording and mixing engineer Josh Medina (Playboy Manbaby,) they’ve built a collective of introspective soundscapes that you truly can get lost in.
Written and recorded throughout winter of 2019 and June 2021 (the middle of the Covid-19 pandemic,) the making of Paper Tiger was a welcome distraction from the world. The overwhelming boredom and lack of inspiration that resulted actually became the inspiration behind some of the songs.
In this interview spotlight, I chat with Ultraviolet Communication about the new music, adapting to lock downs, technology and more.

Where are you from and how do You describe your sound?
We are from Phoenix, Arizona and we would describe our sound as an exploration of the many genres within the alternative rock umbrella.
How did you get here? As in, what inspired or motivated you to take on this journey through music and the music biz?
We love challenging ourselves to create music that is bold but, at the same time, accessible for all kinds of people to enjoy. We do this not only for our own enjoyment, but for our listeners’ as well.
How does your latest project compare/contrast with your previous release(s)? Were you setting out to accomplish anything specific, follow a specific theme, or explore different styles of creation?
This new album “Paper Tiger” experiments a lot more with different arrangements as well as new instrumentation that we did not include on our first record.
Name the biggest challenge you faced as a creative during these unprecedented? How did you adapt? How have you kept the creative fires burning during all this?
We just kept jamming. We pride ourselves on being a tight band, so we love to play together and try to maintain that as well as improve on it. This allowed us to write a lot more as a group as opposed to writing ideas and bringing them together as a group.
Which do you prefer? Vinyl? 8-tracks? Cassettes? CDs? MP3s? Streaming platforms?
We prefer vinyl any day of the week! It is the very best way to listen to music.
