London-based trio Two Penny Blue are set to release their debut single Gypsy on May 19th (2017).
Gypsy explores the nomadic, free-spirited lifestyle of the Romani people in the band’s uptempo, folk-rock style. Brimming with shimmering melodies, frontman Tommy Gather’s vocals complement the playful musicianship beautifully. Gypsy is a truly uplifting track, filled with vibrant harmonies and playful lyricism akin to the likes of The Lumineers’ effortless ability to create infectiously catchy feel-good folk.
In this interview spotlight, we chat with Two Penny Blue about influences, the new project, their music consumption preferences and more.

Let’s dive a little deeper into You, the artist and your music. What attracted you to this genre(s) or style(s)?
Sean: “Our genre sits in the alternative folk-rock category. I have a passion for so many styles of music, but what I love about the band is it’s always changing and developing. I can feel the excitement we all have, the potential to see where the music will go.”
What led you into this journey with music? And further, what drives you to push it out to the public? PLUS Were you trying to accomplish anything specific on this new project? Creatively or otherwise?
Tommy: “There isn’t really anything else I’d want to do, I’ve always thought as long as I can make the same amount of money I’d make in in a retail job then I’d be a happy man. This single is the first thing we have recorded, it’s really a chance for people to listen to us outside of the music venue”
Who or what influences your creativity? Have your tastes in music changed over time?
Tommy: “My music tastes are routed in folk and rock, but now, I seem to be getting very interested in Jazz – I’ve been playing Laura Mvula on repeat on iTunes over the last few weeks.”

Which do you prefer? Vinyl? CDs? MP3s?
Sean: “24 bit / 96 kHz Blu-ray, godda have my Floyd in 5.1”
Will: “ Vinyl, it’s just that bit more rewarding.”
Tommy: “I do like vinyl but Mp3s are just easy I’m just part of the iTunes generation, and proud of my digital album collection.”
How about this one…. Do you prefer Spotify? Apple Music? Bandcamp? Or something else? Why?
Sean: “Spotify all the way”
Other than the digital era overwhelming us with access to an abundance of music, what is the biggest challenge you face when trying to connect with or find new fans?
Will: “Trying to find the punters, where are those punters at?”
