Devon band Tuesday Syndicate return with heartfelt new single Hourglass, out on 23rd March via May Day Music.
A touching reassurance that time will heal and that we’re not alone, Hourglass is a sweeping slice of cinematic indie-pop. With an emotion-strewn sound akin to the likes of Mumford & Sons or James Bay, it flows with twinkling hooks and the husky, impassioned vocals of Sam Mayo. Oozing a soaring emotive power, it’s an instantly catchy and ultimately uplifting ballad.
In this interview spotlight, I chat with Tuesday Syndicate about challenges, the latest project, motivations and more.

Let’s dive a little deeper into You, the artist and your music. What attracted you to this genre(s) or style(s)?
There’s no real poignant moment in our years that suggested a definitive change between genres. As some people know we started out as an acoustic folk act and just over the years as we got more serious, switched our line up around a few times and progressed we just ended up in the position we are now. It is however the first time we’ve really felt like were home musically and couldn’t be happier to be writing the music we are writing currently.
What led you into this journey with music? And further, what drives you to push it out to the public?
We all started playing at a very young age and have come together at different times to create the band that is Tuesday Syndicate now. We’ve all clearly loved music and continue to even more drastically the deeper we delve into its wonders and infinite outcomes. There’s so many reasons why we want to take it further and push it out to others but mostly, probably because the music before our time behind the instruments inspired us so much to pick them up, its nice to think, even if however not as true that we inspire others through our song writing to go out and create their own… whatever it is they want!!
Who or what influences your creativity? Have your tastes in music changed over time?
Our tastes in music change massively and constantly. We seem to write things we love one minute and hate the next. Everyone has their own favourite artists who will play a huge part in the structure and style of their own songs but inspiration and influence comes from everywhere in everyday life and should. Isn’t that the point of life though? To soak up what you can and spit out your own version. But if pushed… Anything epic with great lyrics, a PHAT beat and a catchy riff! Can’t go too wrong there, eh?
Were you trying to accomplish anything specific on this new project? Creatively or otherwise?
Yes, our first full length record! We have recorded a few bits before in different line ups ( its changed a lot) but nothing as we are now. We finally found a firm footing in our style and wanted to nail it down and cut that record for everyone to hear! Or whoever wants to buy and listen. We’re hoping everyone, HA!
What was the last song you listened to?
Honestly… Danger Zone – Kenny Loggins….. loved it. Gonna watch Top Gun later.
Which do you prefer? Vinyl? CDs? MP3s?
Ahh hands down vinyl for the quality and experience. Getting home with a large, large, large whiskey and spinning a record is one of the finer things in life. However, that player is slightly difficult to get mobile so for everyday life, it would have to be the MP3.
How about this one…. Do you prefer Spotify? Apple Music? Bandcamp? Or something else? Why?
Spotify! Love that discover playlist every week. Fresh tunes without having to look too far is epic. No idea how they managed it too but its peanuts! Peanuts in a thick delicious chocolatey sexy mess. Cheers Spotify!
Other than the digital era overwhelming us with access to an abundance of music, what is the biggest challenge you face when trying to connect with or find new fans?
Our biggest problem has always been, potentially the sharpest weapon in our arsenal. A lot of our inspiration comes from our coastal roots but it does mean that we are a long way from decent venues and connecting with those venues at the distance from us they all are is tough, then once we have, the travel is a killer at times. That said, being on the road with the band, let’s have it!
