The Rumble Wagon is an electrifying Americana, roots, folk, and soul band hailing from Hamilton, Ontario. Known for their infectious melodies and captivating performances, The Rumble Wagon draws inspiration from a diverse range of influences, including the legendary Tom Waits, Bruce Springsteen, Van Morrison, and Cake, along with the modern stylings of Counting Crows.
The band’s unique sound is a testament to their eclectic musical tastes, which also incorporate unexpected sources such as old telephones, TV static, underwater cop dramas, and broken lenses. This fusion of traditional and experimental elements creates an immersive sonic experience that is truly one-of-a-kind.
“Overall the themes are more hopeful, reverent that we are mired in some regards, but music and art will provide some solace,” the band says. “The Rumble Wagon will be a shaky ride but she’ll get you there.”
What can you share with readers about your new project?
The Rumble Wagon is poised to be a more collaborative endeavour as we go forward. We are now a 6 piece act with myself, Steve Deeps on Keys, Vox and Guitar, Ryan Barwin on Pedal Steel, Dani Dee on Piano and Vox, Andrew Marshall on Bass and Vox, Andrew Alridge on Guitar and Vox, and Vince Campovari Waters on drums.
The co-writing is just in its infancy and the songs we are to release over the next months are strange mash of Covid Delayed music with various players coming in and out.
Our live shows can take on a variety type of vibe as we bring in other writers and back them Wrecking Crew style. We have projectionists and painters join us and Dani and Ryan often take the lead on things. I have converted and old telephone into microphone and the whole thing gets this Tom Waits arm Wrestlinbg Bruce Springsteen type thing happening.
How does this release compare with your other projects you had in the past?
The song leans into the strength in my voice, again pulling on a personal Sprinsteenian type of delivery which has happened in the past. This is the first of 2 cowrites with Ronson Armstrong though and the song has a little more concise pope sensibility to it as a result. This is the first time I didn’t write the music and only the words.
What about this single makes you most proud?a
That the message is positive. It was originally written as “there is something in your way/what it is you couldn’t say”. the pandemic had enough of us down that I re wrote it to say there is “nothing in your way you may bend but you won’t break.” I lean a lot lyricly in a more morose tone…..it’s nice to divert for a bit.
Was there a specific goal you were trying to accomplish with this release?
Push my voice, and re brand from my own thing to a more collaborative vibe.
What inspires you to create music? What motivates you to keep going?
I was 16 and my father got divorced from my Mom….he started playing music again….he was happier than I’d ever seen him. When I saw him like that I vowed to never stop. shedding light on tough topics for other people to relate to.
If you could collaborate with anyone – dead or alive, famous or unknown – who would it be and why? If it’s an indie/DIY artist, please include a link so readers can check them out.
Tom Waits – I’d like to play organ and he play piano. Why? ummm he’s tom Waits.
What was the last song you listened to? Favorite all-time bands/artists?
Peace Love and Understanding by Nick Lowe as performed by Elvis Costello. Favourites are The Black Crowes, Tom Waits, Springsteen, The Hold Steady, Soul Coughing, Cake, Talking Heads, Thelonius Monk
