THE iMAGINARY FRIENDS are a London based, inter-gender, gloom drenched new-wave band. With a punk swagger and cinematic production, brutally analysing modern western culture. Consciously trying to push the boundaries of what it means to be a band in the 21st Century, sonically, lyrically and visually.
In this interview spotlight, I chat with THE iMAGINARY FRIENDS about the latest music, adapting during a pandemic, technology and more.
Full Q&A along with links and music below.
Where are you from and how do you describe your style of music?
Bristol, York and the mountains of Moria. Old school new wave.
How did you get here? As in, what inspired or motivated you to take on this journey through music and the music biz?
When I was 7, I saw a documentary on John Denver and vowed to myself to do all I could to follow in his sacred footsteps.
How does your latest release compare/contrast with your previous release(s)?
This single is in fact our very first single.
How have you kept the creative fires burning during lockdown?
We don’t need any premediated techniques or rituals to keep our creative fires burning. They are constantly aflame, blazing brightly like the 7th circle of hell.
What was the last song you listened to?
Life Is Just A Bowl Of Cherries by Julie Garland
Which do you prefer? Vinyl? 8-tracks? Cassettes? CDs? MP3s? Streaming platforms?
Well as we are releasing our debut single ‘The Golden Age of the Narcissist’ on cassette, that format is pretty darn good. The Doctor (bass) however, reckons CDs are far superior because they tick both of the most important boxes: physical ownership, coupled with sweet, sweet convenience.
Where is the best place to connect with you and follow your journey?
The best place is in person at our gigs. But as for day to day connection, when we’re not on tour, I suppose it would be on our Instagram or YouTube.
I really appreciate Your time. Anything else before we sign off?
Our very first gig in our great nation’s capital will take place on March 18th at The Others in Stoke Newington. Find links to tickets this gig and all our other gigs on our socials.
