Midlands based four-piece, Superego, are preparing to unveil their high-octane brand of indie-rock to a wider audience through the release of single Sleep via Big Indie Records, available to stream and download now.
Blending jagged, angular guitar segments with lush, hazy vocals, Superego have taken inspiration from the angst-ridden era of 90’s grunge and sumptuously merged it with the multi-layered textures associated with shoegaze.
Sleep sees Superego create a distorted, energy filled sound as blistering, feedback laden guitars envelope the listener and are accented beautifully by the wistful, dream-like vocals of Cam Potts.
In this interview spotlight, I chat with Superego about the latest project, motivations, challenges and more.

Let’s dive a little deeper into You, the artist and your music. What attracted you to this genre(s) or style(s)?
The sound of the band is something that came about completely naturally if I’m honest. I think since then I’ve written certain songs with the style in mind, but usually I just write and what comes out is a Superego song.
What led you into this journey with music? And further, what drives you to push it out to the public?
My journey with music has been one from a really early age. I was brought up in a very musical family, my dad plays, my uncles, my late grandfather, pretty much all of my cousins. So music was always a massive influence on me and since I got my first guitar at 12 it was clear to me and all those around me that this is what I wanted to do.
The urge to push it into the public domain comes firstly from loving paying live. I love live music as a listener, but playing it is easily my favourite thing to do. So putting your music out gets people down to the gigs! But with Superego, the lyrics are a really important facet of the band, and to touch someone with my lyrics is an incredibly personal thing and something I really enjoy.
Who or what influences your creativity? Have your tastes in music changed over time?
Society certainly influences my creativity. I like to write about social issues, and how messed up a lot of things are in this world. A third of all the food manufactured gets thrown away, yet there’s still poverty…there’s a lot to say.
My taste in music has changed so much. Not to say I don’t like everything I listened to from when I was a kid. I was lucky and had a musical family so got brought up on Duke Ellington, The Beatles and Jimi Hendrix. But I have certainly gone on my own musical discovery and got obsessed with Elliott Smith, Jeff Buckley and Radiohead. Those 3 have a huge influence upon my writing for Superego.
Were you trying to accomplish anything specific on this new project? Creatively or otherwise?
Yeah, definitely. The name comes from Freud’s concept of the subconscious, which I find fascinating. The Superego, in Freud’s work, is the moral conscience. And I wanted to take that and write about how the world seems to be losing it’s conscience and to be heading down the road of greed and gluttony, a consumer society, which is something I vehemently oppose.
What was the last song you listened to?
Soft Girls and Boys Club – 22:22
Which do you prefer? Vinyl? CDs? MP3s?
Vinyl. I accept that CD’s sound just as good but there’s nothing like taking a vinyl out the sleeve and hearing that crackle.
How about this one…. Do you prefer Spotify? Apple Music? Bandcamp? Or something else? Why?
Hmmmm…I suppose Bandcamp as they actively promote supporting the bands. But spottily and apple music have become great vehicles for getting your music to vast amounts of people, they just don’t pay the artist enough!
Other than the digital era overwhelming us with access to an abundance of music, what is the biggest challenge you face when trying to connect with or find new fans?
The biggest challenge is perseverance. It’s a tough industry, based on who you know. And it’s often hard to find those people that can propel your music in the right direction and get you some traction. But if you have material you believe in and love the art, keep plugging away you should meet the right people. At least, that’s what we’re going with!
