You know… You Should Have Seen His Apartment!
Where are you from and what style of music do you create? (In your own words, not necessarily in marketing terms or by popular genre classifications.)
We were both children of the world. Growing up in places like Germany, Hawaii, Texas and Colorado, to name a few. Coincidentally, we both separately moved to New York City around the age of 18 to pursue careers in music. After 12 years of playing the same clubs, bars and even with the same band members (but never actually meeting) we moved to Nashville, TN. In Nashville, we were introduced by a mutual friend and the rest is history! We like to say our music is somewhere in between 80s rock, glam and pop and we write the kind of songs you can sing in the shower or scream at a show.
What led you down this path of music and what motivates you to keep going?
Sugar Fitz was born out of a deep, studied admiration of 80s pop and 70s punk and the desire to create the kind of music you can kick a trash can around and jump on your bed with your girlfriends to. What motivates us is a bottle of rosé and our badass friendship. We are continually inspired by each other and the idea of not taking ourselves too seriously.
How is this new release different than previous ones? Were you trying to accomplish anything specific?
You Should Have Seen His Apartment’ was originally written as the consequential gold digger song. A song that says “f*ck it, I may not like him but I sure like his stuff.” But when we went to make the video, we decided to flip the storyline on its head and give it a little twist. Watch the video and you’ll find out.
For the recording process we decided to boost the music sonically and actually sing our vocals into a mic instead of our iPhones when in quarantine. 😉
Name one or two challenges you face as an indie musician in this oversaturated, digital music age? How has technology helped you (since we know it does help)?
This year, the biggest struggle we’ve had is not being able to play live shows and connect with our fans. As a new band, that is one of the most important things you can do. Technology has helped us be able to create our music while in quarantine. Recording vocals in our closets, our producer, Alex Dezen in LA playing everything you hear in the track and our home studios have been the reason we are able to put music out this year!
We’ve also had to up our social media game to stay connected with our fans and be creative in our approach to stand out from the crowd. Virtual shows, Patreon and merch have come a long way this year and have helped artists like us to survive during this pandemic.
What was the last song you listened to?
Money Changes Everything by Cyndi Lauper, naturally.
Which do you prefer? Vinyl? CDs? MP3s?
Vinyl
How about this one…. Do you prefer Spotify? Apple Music? Bandcamp? Or something else? Why?Â
Really, none of the above. We prefer selling records at live shows. But if we have to say one, Spotify. We find it reaches most of our demographic.
Where is the best place to connect with you online and discover more music?
Check our music out on any streaming platform (Spotify, Apple Music, Bandcamp, Title) and connect with us on Instagram (@sugarfitzmusic). And yes, we have a Tik Tok (@sugarfitzmusic)
