Woozy alt-pop duo ST. MARTiiNS return with another seductively sweet new single to add to their critically acclaimed repertoire. My Girl is out now via LAB Records.
Dynamic in execution, My Girl is as visceral as it is poignant. Lead singer Katie Lynch’s distinctively dreamy vocals are at the forefront, soaring effortlessly languid melodies and surging guitar twangs to create a sound that is charmingly evocative. Talking about the single, Katie elaborates, “when we first started playing My Girl the joke was that it was the furthest into jazz styling we would go. The song developed and is one of our only genuinely fun and free songs. It is about my friendships with my best female friends and how simultaneously annoying and fulfilling they have been. A good fun song for mid-summer in a time of complete political chaos around us. But we will get into that later.”
In this interview spotlight, I chat with ST.MARTiiNS about their latest release, challenges, technology and more.

Let’s dive a little deeper into You, the artist and your music. What attracted you to this genre(s) or style(s)?
It wasn’t so much an attraction to this genre rather a sound that developed over time. We both have so many individual and shared influencers and influences which has leaked into our writing methods.
What led you into this journey with music? And further, what drives you to push it out to the public?
We met when we were so young but it has always been the only real focus we both had. I was into musicals and brass bands at first, worlds away from what we do now but it has all helped. We have used our music as a way of escaping and coping and that’s what we are trying to remind ourselves of at the moment. We want to do it because we can, not for any other self serving reason.
Who or what influences your creativity? Have your tastes in music changed over time?
I think so many situational things have mainly influenced us but also the rich creativity of others has always inspired me so much. I love finding music from any time period and dissecting it and obsessing over it. We goto lots of gigs and I read a lot of books. I couldn’t pinpoint my one main influence. Our tastes have definitely changed, we were laughing at the taste we had when we were teenagers comparatively to ours now but how its all had its place.
Were you trying to accomplish anything specific on this new project? Creatively or otherwise?
I always aim to be more honest. That’s my main focus going forward, and being happy whilst I’m doing it. I want to discuss all big issues and also nothing things.
What was the last song you listened to?
‘Die’ by Stella Donnelly.
Which do you prefer? Vinyl? CDs? MP3s?
Actually, we use all of them. CD’s in the car, vinyl in the house and MP3s the rest of the time. They all have their place.
How about this one…. Do you prefer Spotify? Apple Music? Bandcamp? Or something else? Why?
I love spotify purely for it’s artist interaction. Also I love making playlists. Again, they all have their place though.
Other than the digital era overwhelming us with access to an abundance of music, what is the biggest challenge you face when trying to connect with or find new fans?
I think recently I became so obsessed with feeling like I was failing all the time, the over saturation of the music world becoming oppressive to me. However, spending some time focusing on why we are really doing this and being honest with everyone has really helped.
Where is the best place to connect with you online? Discover more music?
We mainly use instagram because there are so many visual elements to st.martiins. We make a lot of playlists on spotify aswell and have a lot of releases planned for the upcoming months.
