In this interview spotlight, I chat with St. Levi about the latest release, challenges, technology and more.
Full Q&A along with links and music below.
Where are you from and what style of music do you create? (In your own words, not necessarily in marketing terms or by popular genre classifications.)
I’m from Tel Aviv, Israel and I create music that comes from the bottom of my heart, it basically can be about anything, it can be about a real experience I’ve had, or about a fictional story or about global topics.
In my music, I love to combine real and authentic sounds from real instruments With synthetic ones, I think that’s what modern music is saying where you come from and seeing where you’re going toward!
What led you down this path of music and what motivates you to keep going?
I’ve actually been releasing music for five years and I’ve been exploring my sound and my direction a lot. At some point I felt like I had to take a step back and think and rearrange myself, I looked back at the very first and pure reasons and influences that made me make music in the first place, then I combined it with while I’m currently listening to and the things that involved have involved, so I was looking for the perfect combination of both of them and find my own voice inside of that and the thing that keeps me motivated is staying creative and fresh with every project I’m doing.
How is the release of “For the Better” different than previous ones? Were you trying to accomplish anything specific?
”For the Better” actually took forever to finish, the recording sessions took a lot of time, so this song is very close to my heart and really important to me.
It’s about the real passion for real love, a real romance that could last forever, or longer than what I was used to.
I’m very specific with the lyrics in this song, it describes a whole day with my loved one. The chorus is very global, especially with these crazy days of worldwide quarantine it has a stronger meaning.
My message with this song is to remember that whatever you’re going through, whether it’s a global crisis or just you dealing with your own heartbreak or struggles, it’s important to remember that everything happens for the better and the reason for those things will always be for you and for your own growth!
Name one or two challenges you face as an indie musician in this over saturated, digital music age? How has technology helped you (since we know it does help)?
As an indie musician, there are a lot of challenges and a lot of great benefits as well.
The big benefit of being an indie musician is being completely free to release whatever you like and being in complete control over your releases, sound, and image.
I’d say that one of the main challenges is budget and money, sometimes it’s getting hard to make things like a music video, promotion, and marketing but I’m doing my best and more to give to the world the best product I can provide.
What was the last song you listened to?
Cocaine Carolina by Johnny Cash.
Which do you prefer? Vinyl? CDs? MP3s?
I absolutely prefer vinyl, this is the real deal, it has its own emotion and feeling to it, although MP3s have made the listener’s life way easier.
What is your favorite part of creating your music?
You know that the process of music-making is very long and as I said, I’m an indie musician so I write, produce, mix and master my music so it’s kind of a hard question, but I believe that the main two would be writing and producing the track because these are the parts you actually see the song comes to life.
