Electrifying Chelmsford four-piece Secret Company are back with a bang as their latest single ‘Lightning Parade’ sparks the fuse of anticipation for their debut album ‘The World Lit Up And Filled With Colour’ which is set for release on March 10th.
‘Lightning Parade’ is the perfect tease of what to expect from their debut long player. It opens with a tender approach as Scott Revell’s liquid-like voice takes center stage and starts the story. It’s not long however until the full band kick in, raising the intensity one notch at a time – something Secret Company do with effortless ease. Ultimately, the chorus on ‘Lightning Parade’ comes crashing in and fills the air with a relentless energy so powerful you’ll be left clutching onto the legs of your seat.
In this interview spotlight, we chat with the band about influences, their newest project and more.
Q&A along with links and the video for ‘Lightning Parade‘ below.
Where are you from and what style of music do you create? (In your own words, not necessarily in marketing terms or by popular genre classifications.)
We’re all in Essex which is just outside London. Kushal is from India though. Back in the day. We’re an indie band I guess, whatever that means. We started out wanting to create songs that would hopefully connect with people so our music does come from like a pop music perspective. Plus we’ve always been suckers for big strong hooky vocal melodies! We blended like indie/rock and ambient elements together with big tribal drums and kind of found our desired sound.
What led you down this path of music and what motivates you to stay the course?
I guess that inspiration we got as kids to want to play instruments and perform has just kinda stayed. Everyone else sensibly put the instruments down and got real jobs. We’re the dropouts. You have to love almost everything about it, even some of the boring stuff to stick with it because it’s not always performing and creating, then you have to work a shitty job on top of this too :/
How is your new release different than previous ones? Did you set out to accomplish anything specific?
There are similar characteristics to what we’ve done in the past but ‘Lightning Parade’ is one of our darker songs. In fact it is probably the darkest song we’ve ever written. It just came out to be honest, I remember like coming up with these two eery as fuck chords on the guitar and then we just started throwing it together in the rehearsal room.
Do you face any challenges as an indie musician in a digital age? On the flip side, how has technology helped you (if it has)?
There are a lot of challenges yeah. But none that we can’t handle I guess. Some things have got better and some things have got worse. The best thing we can do for a band in our position is just go with the flow and focus on adapting rather than getting caught up with any shit. One great part of it is we get listeners/fans from all over the world listening to our music, which is actually an incredible thing! But then on the other hand no one will come to your gig because either the venue has closed down or people are happier sitting indoors with their devices in hand haha. It’s swings and roundabouts.
Without the technology I guess we wouldn’t be making the music we’re making though!
Where can we follow you online and hear more music?
