Hamilton, ON rock group Savelene‘s new single, “A New End,” is a deep dive into the complexities of relationships and personal growth. Formed during the COVID-19 lockdowns, Savelene is the brainchild of Rich Sookrah (vocals) and Dallas Toni (guitars), who explore themes of fear, acceptance, and the bittersweet nature of endings. With their latest single, they confront the emotional tension that arises when relationships end and what comes after.
The song was inspired by the navigation of relationships—both past and present—and the lessons learned through them. “A New End” captures the simultaneous sense of loss and hope that comes with endings, layered over a unique blend of rock and alt-metal influences.
With multiple time signatures and key changes, “A New End” stands out for its unique structure and the raw emotion it carries. Dallas and Rich blend tension and release, creating a track that feels both conflicted and relieved. The lyrics reflect on the complexities of relationships, showing that even in the end, there is growth and acceptance. The song also touches on the tension between longing and the realization that it’s okay to let go.
What can you share with readers about your new project?
Savelene is a gritty band from a gritty city in Southern Ontario, Canada. Our city is an industrial one, but also filled with beauty. I think the music reflects that.
How does this release compare with your other projects you had in the past?
We’re definitely hitting our stride with this release. It’s a culmination of working together for the past five years and playing to our strengths.
What about this single makes you most proud?
We challenged ourselves and experimented with different time signatures and key changes throughout the song while keeping it a concise, focused track.
Was there a specific goal you were trying to accomplish with this release?
More or less just trying to get ears on the project. I think the music speaks for itself.
What inspires you to create music? What motivates you to keep going?
Inspiration comes from everywhere. I (Dallas – guitar) find music is very much tied to emotions for me. I’m not sure I would really classify myself as a guitarist first so much as a songwriter whose guitar acts as a conduit for how I’m feeling.
If you could collaborate with anyone – dead or alive, famous or unknown – who would it be and why? If it’s an indie/DIY artist, please include a link so readers can check them out.
I know it’s cliché, but Deftones have been my (Dallas) favorite band since 1996, so obviously them. Another band that is very special to me is a band called Chore, out of Dunnville, Ontario, Canada. I used to go watch them any chance I could and would love to collaborate. Chore – YouTube
What was the last song you listened to? Favorite all-time bands/artists?
Oh geez, well, I’ve been listening to a defunct Canadian band called Age of Electric and their song I Don’t Mind. A really great late 90s song that takes me right back there. As for all-time artists, I’d say Deftones, Metallica, Frank Zappa, Chore, Glassjaw, At The Drive-In, COC, Pink Floyd, GnR, Pantera. There are too many…
