Sarah Brix is a Canadian singer/songwriter multi-instrumentalist performing in the genre of alternative pop. Now based in Toronto, Sarah was born and raised in the picturesque town of Elora before moving to the city to pursue a career in music. She recently graduated from Seneca College for performance, songwriting and music production and since then has performed at multiple Toronto venues such as The Supermarket and Handlebar.
She mainly enjoys writing about mental health and addiction and released her first self-produced single, “Fly,” this past January, which speaks on suicide. Her performance of this song got her second place in the 2024 Songs Revealed songwriting competition. She hopes that by creating songs like this she can help people dealing with depression and anxiety feel less alone, as her favourite artists have done for her.
Sarah‘s brand new single, “Ended Here,” tells the story of being ghosted by her best friend and working through the loss and plethora of emotions that she experienced. The song was produced by Columbian producer and mixing engineer JUYI.
What can you share with readers about your new project?
My new single “Ended Here” tells the true story of being ghosted by my best friend. It is in the genre of alternative pop and was produced by Columbian producer JUYI. Not only is it extremely special to me due to the emotion behind the song but also because of the people I got to work with on the song and music video.
How does this release compare with your other projects you had in the past?
This release is much larger in every way than my past projects. Before “Ended Here”, I released two singles “Fly” and Pass Me By” both of which were self produced and self marketed. They also were both very acoustic centred and much more folk than this new song. “Ended Here” is quite cinematic with lots of electronic MIDI sounds and elements of pop. As well, for the first time I had the pleasure of working with a team of people including the amazing Columbian producer JUYI, my dedicated music video team Drew Brix and Ethan Kapitan, and an incredible PR team at Auteur Research. This is also the first song that I have made a music video for which is extremely exciting for me!
What about this single makes you most proud?
I think I’m most proud of watching how the song has evolved over the years. This song was created out of the first beat I ever made 4 years ago. From there, it was another year before I wrote lyrics and recorded a demo, and then another year until I met JUYI and re recorded and produced the song. Seeing how this song went from a basic Logic beat into a powerhouse of a song was truly special and I’m very proud of what we made.
Was there a specific goal you were trying to accomplish with this release?
This release took so much time and effort from not only myself but also other individuals that I knew I needed to try to get it out to as many people as possible. As with all of my music all I ever want is to connect with other people and hope that someone out there feels validated and represented through my writing. Being ghosted by someone important to you is never easy but hopefully this song can help someone else who’s experienced it work through their emotions. That would be the ultimate goal from this song.
What inspires you to create music? What motivates you to keep going?
For me songwriting is my emotional outlet so inspirations can come from anything that evokes a strong emotional reaction in me. “Ended Here” is a perfect example of that, and the writing of this song really helped me work through my emotions from losing touch with my best friend. That’s also why I plan to continue to release music about mental health as someone who’s struggled with depression and anxiety in my life, writing about it gives me a temporary release.
As far as my motivation to keep going, performing and songwriting is the only career that I think will be truly fulfilling for me. I think there’s something truly magical about music’s ability to make us feel so deeply and the way it can connect people all around the world. Every time someone streams my song or comes to one of my shows I am instantly motivated to keep going.
If you could collaborate with anyone – dead or alive, famous or unknown – who would it be and why? If it’s an indie/DIY artist, please include a link so readers can check them out.
Of course there is an endless amount of artists that I would love to collaborate with but currently Jack Kays comes to mind. I’ve been a fan for over a year now and he’s just released a new album “DEADBEAT! – Disc 1” on all streaming platforms. My brother introduced me to his music and ever since then I have connected so profoundly with his songwriting and emotional vocal performances. He seems like a very down to earth person and a lot of the songwriting I’ve been doing recently is inspired by his music.
What was the last song you listened to? Favorite all-time bands/artists?
The last song I listened to was “Plan B” off of Jack Kays’ new album “DEADBEAT – Part 1”. I’ve also been listening to Sabrina Carpenter’s new album “Short n’ Sweet”.
My favourite artists seem to constantly change but currently Jack Kays, Noah Kahan, Sabrina Carpenter and Billie Eilish are all in the rotation. I’ll also always have a special place in my heart for Lil Peep, an artist who passed way too young and whose music helped me through some of the worst mental periods I ever went through.
Where is the best place to find you and stay connected?
You can check out my music on any and all streaming platforms including Spotify and Apple Music. I’m most active on Instagram and TikTok so follow me there to stay up to date on my releases.
