In this interview spotlight, I chat with Ruby Rockette about her latest single, motivations, challenges and more.
Full Q&A along with links and music below.
Where are you from and what style of music do you create? (In your own words, not necessarily in marketing terms or by popular genre classifications.)
I am originally from Nigeria! I feel like I create music for confident women, bad bitches if you will and the men that love them!
What led you down this path of music and what motivates you to stay the course?
I’ve been a dancer since I was 3 years old. I feel like music has always been a part of me! What motivates me to stay the course is a time in my life I was in a deep depression and music brought me out of it! Writing songs, singing, and rapping reminded me how awesome life is.
How is “On My One” different than your previous projects? Did you set out to accomplish anything specific?
Hmmm. This is one of my first songs I wrote after getting back into music after being knocked down very hard! It’s different because it’s about how I feel inwards. Defeating myself mentally, opposed to how I affect the world and those around me. Mental game!
Do you face challenges as a musician in a digital age? How has technology helped you (assuming it helps)?
Yes, competing with a lot of brands gunning for a bit of everyone’s attention. Technology has helped me reach people outside of the DMV in terms of networking and creating a creative community.
Where can we connect with you online and discover more music?
