At 18 years old, you will be hard pressed to find a more developed and well-rounded songwriter and vocalist than ROSIE. ROSIE was born into an artistic family. By the time she was 11, she was already taking guitar lessons and writing original material and by age 14, she was releasing original music. Since then, her music has been streamed twenty thousand times, and her song “Out of Time”, co-written with her brother, Matteo Scher, has been viewed over 70 thousand times on YouTube.
In this interview spotlight, I chat with ROSIE about her latest release, motivations, challenges and more.
Full Q&A along with links and music below.
Where are you from and what style of music do you create? (In your own words, not necessarily in marketing terms or by popular genre classifications.)
I am from a little town in New York and I like to think of myself as a groovy Indie/Pop, singer songwriter!
What led you down this path of music and what motivates you to keep going?
My entire family are artists/musicians, but my first memories of falling in love with music were of my father, playing guitar, singing me to sleep at night with, “You Are My Sunshine” by Jimmie Davis. Soon I picked up the guitar, and that was when I discovered my love for singing and writing songs. As for my constant motivation to continue down my musical path, my biggest inspiration is my brother. He is always reminding me that our dreams are both realistic and achievable if we want it enough, and if we work hard for it every day.
How is this new release different than previous ones? Were you trying to accomplish anything specific?
In the past, the music I released was more slow, melancholic and in my opinion, immature. In the past year, I as an artist and as a person have changed so much, and therefor so has my music. Now I am writing and producing more upbeat pop songs, the kind of songs that you can’t help but blast in your car!
Name one or two challenges you face as an indie musician in this oversaturated, digital music age? How has technology helped you (since we know it does help)?
I think that in this day in age, it is difficult to find live instruments in popular music, everything is created electronically, so as an indie/pop artist I am desperately trying to keep real instrumentation alive in the popular music industry (or at least in my songs). But there is no doubt that technology has helped me in so many ways, especially with recording, producing, and promoting my music.
What was the last song you listened to?
The last song I listened to was “The Same Love That Made Me Laugh” by Bill Withers.
I’m a 70’s, neo-soul, funk, kind of girl. It’s important to remember that all of that music was once considered “pop”.
Which do you prefer? Vinyl? CDs? MP3s?
I want to say Vinyl to sound hip but the truth is that MP3’S are the easiest most efficient way to share music files with other people, so I gotta go with MP3’S!
How about this one…. Do you prefer Spotify? Apple Music? Bandcamp? Or something else? Why?
Spotify all the way!
