Hailing from Beamsville, Ontario, singer-songwriter Riley Michaels is known for his soulful voice, guitar mastery, and heartfelt composition. He has carved a unique space in the Canadian music scene by blending pop, blues, and adult contemporary sounds with an emotive touch.
His latest single, “Story of My Life,” is a raw, introspective exploration of creative struggle and personal growth. The song was born out of a period of artistic stagnation for Riley, as he candidly reflects on feeling uninspired and unsure how to reignite his creativity. “Story of My Life” captures this universal experience in a stripped-down acoustic arrangement that’s calming, chill, and perfect for a rainy-day playlist.
Unlike the arena-ready, high-energy anthems Riley is known for, this track takes a more subdued approach. Recorded with minimal production, “Story of My Life” embraces imperfection, featuring raw, one-take performances that mirror the honest, straightforward lyricism.
What can you share with readers about your new project?
– This new song is the start of my goal to release more music than I’ve ever released before. Usually, I would put out 2 songs per year, but I’m looking to put out more music than ever!
How does this release compare with your other projects you had in the past?
– This one is different because it’s unlike anything I’ve done before. It is a style of music that I’ve always written, but never released. This one was a stark contrast to the
arena-rocking music that I usually put out.
What about this single makes you most proud?
– This song got me out of a creative rut. I was suffering from a case of writer’s block, and this one, comically about being uninspired, got me out of it. It helped me get back into action, so to speak.
Was there a specific goal you were trying to accomplish with this release?
– I just wanted to put something out that had meaning.. The story behind it was very raw and real, and I’d like to do more of that in the future.
What inspires you to create music? What motivates you to keep going?
– The truth is – it is hard to stay motivated to keep releasing music.. I love music, and I love songwriting. What I don’t like is the pressure to post on social
media 5 times a week, and to always be a “content creator.” It’s definitely not what I signed up for, but it is part of the process nowadays. Regardless of that – I still love to create.
If you could collaborate with anyone – dead or alive, famous or unknown – who would it be and why? If it’s an indie/DIY artist, please include a link so readers can check them out.
– Prince. There’s no other choice. The creative genius would be a fantastic collaborative partner. I just think that someone who has dipped their toes into every facet of music excellence would be
the best choice of partners. Not only was he a guitar legend, but his creativity and songwriting skills were just off the charts.
What was the last song you listened to? Favorite all-time bands/artists?
– I recently rediscovered just how good “Teenage Dirtbag” by Wheatus is. Such a classic. Legendary.
Where is the best place to find you and stay connected?
– Best places to interact with me are on Instagram @RileyMichaelsOfficial, and on my Facebook Page at Riley Michaels!
I really appreciate your time. Is there anything you’d like to share before we sign off?
– Thanks for letting me be a music nerd for a minute! 🙂
