Where are you from and what style of music do you create? (In your own words, not necessarily in marketing terms or by popular genre classifications.)
I am originally from Prague and so unlikely in States, we listen to tons of techno, drum’n’bass and industrial – these are the genres that now I am drawn to the most but paradoxically I haven’t started to listen to that kind of music until I was like 17 – I grew up on folk and American grunge and punk bands like Nirvana, Pixies, Black flag or The Distillers. I think that my music is influenced by both worlds though, dark electro from Europe and aggressive grunge from America. I also listen to lots of ambient and classical music and I think that you can hear fragments of these genres in my music as well.
What led you down this path of music and what motivates you to stay the course?
I have always thought I will end up in a band, you know, like a real rockstar but eventually I became sick of trying to deal with people and persuade them to follow me lead. My ego was in the way, their ego was in the way. I played with an acoustic guitar for while but I was interested in bigger production that would capture the emotions of my earlier acoustic music with the intensity and sound of a big production. Nowadays I dream of being a composer. I love playing with new sounds, new libraries, new synths as well as ethnic or other real instruments. That’s what inspires me – when I explore.
How is your new release different than previous ones? Did you set out to accomplish anything specific?
I wanted to get technically better, more sophisticated, more up to date but I also wanted to stay further away from the need to be liked, playable, mainstream. I am still trying to please people, but this time I kind of pleased myself too. I proved myself that I can do this on my own and it will only get better. I am getting more comfortable with not being grunge or not being techno. I keep getting more comfortable with inventing my own sound. This record proved me right and it also gave me a validation. I’m kinda proud of it, even though I can’t wait to finish the next one. You don’t wanna get too comfortable
Do you face any challenges as an indie musician in a digital age? On the flip side, how has technology helped you (if it has)?
I can’t do social media. Can’t. Don’t like it at all. It doesn’t feel natural to me and the older I get, the harder it gets. All these answers probably seem so confident, but I still feel like I have to beg people to pay attention to my music. I am ashamed when I hear a compliment cause I don’t believe it’s true. Social media is all about bragging and showing other people how confident and cool or uncool you are. I don’t like it.
On the other side, I do well with technology as hardware. Love my laptop, love my synths, love my gear.
