RedrumSociety, led by singer and guitarist Zach Cohen, is possibly the most sexual music your earholes will ever encounter. Influences of RedrumSociety are mostly born from blues, funk, rock, and soul, but don’t let that fool you. RedrumSociety is its own brand of music. All of their songs are based on their own unique life perspective stories.
Redrum’s music is for the people who love when their ex-girlfriends kick them while they’re down, who love having nowhere left to run to, and especially those who look at someone and wonder “how long can you last in my head?” Zach has been through hell and back to reach the position he is in now: Poised for his shot at the music heavyweight title. At 28 years old he is in his prime and is ready to show the world (and his dad) that he is not completely worthless.
In this interview spotlight, I chat with RedrumSociety about the latest music, adapting during a pandemic, technology and more.
Full Q&A along with links and music below.
Where are you from and how do You describe your style of music?
RedrumSociety is a South Florida band that makes funky alternative music.
How did you get here? As in, what inspired or motivated you to take on this journey through music and the music biz?
RedrumSociety has had a wild and winding journey to get where they are today. Originally founded in 2008, when four high school students came together, the band now is led by its last original member, Zach Cohen, who is the guitarist and frontman of the band. For six years, he relocated the band to Los Angeles. After legal problems of some members, and a drug fueled downfall of Cohen, he came back to Florida, leaving the band on hiatus. From 2015 to 2018, Zach refocused himself in sobriety and relaunched the band, adding members Sean Chesal (drums), Andrew Platt (keyboards), and Ruddy Simon (bass).
Cohen’s motivation has been to keep the legacy of RedrumSociety alive, as well as to connect with others who feel lonely, cast aside, and misunderstood.
How does your latest project compare/contrast with your previous release(s)? Were you setting out to accomplish anything specific, follow a specific theme, or explore different styles of creation?
Their previous release “It’s Too Late” is considered to be RedrumSociety’s funkiest song, and while lyrically very on par with their trademark style, musically it strayed away. Their newest release is “Stormy Weather” and it is clear RedrumSociety has come back to their classic form with a baroque style arrangement. “Stormy Weather” is about the verbal abuse Zach put up with in a previous relationship.
Name the biggest challenge you faced as a creative during these unprecedented? How did you adapt? How have you kept the creative fires burning during all this?
RedrumSociety has made it this far and this long by constantly adapting. Through many lineups, locations, legal problems, and other challenges, the constant has always been a desire to never give up. They are driven by a common goal, which is to connect with their audience. “We feel obliged to represent people who feel alone, excluded, crapped on, forgotten, and misunderstood. We want to the the voice for them and the example that you can be yourself and be proud about it” said frontman, Zach Cohen.
What was the last song you listened to?
Subterranean Homesick Blues by Bob Dylan.
Which do you prefer? Vinyl? 8-tracks? Cassettes? CDs? MP3s? Streaming platforms?
Vinyl all the way!
Where is the best place to connect with you and follow your journey?
The best way to follow the RedrumScoeity journey and connect with them is through Instagram (@redrumsociety), YouTube (RedrumSocietyBand), TikTok (@redrumsociety) and Twitter (@RedrumSociety).
