Toronto-based singer-songwriter and filmmaker pssyclwz unveils her mesmerizing new single, “odessa (she-side),” a haunting and melancholic cover of Caribou‘s original track, “Odessa.” This alternative electronic anthem brings a fresh, female perspective to the song while capturing the introspective, hypnotic mood of the original. The track showcases pssyclwz‘s ethereal vocals, which seamlessly replace some of the instrumental elements, creating a unique and intimate version of the song.
“odessa (she-side)” is inspired by pssyclwz‘s long-time wish for a female-driven take on Caribou‘s iconic song. She recalls hearing the original version over a decade ago and being drawn to the idea of a “girl version,” much like other memorable reinterpretations of popular songs from the early 2000s. The track is a labour of love and finally exists after numerous attempts to capture its perfect balance between technical mastery and emotional authenticity.
“odessa (she-side)” embodies the core themes pssyclwz frequently explores in her music—offbeat perspectives, emotional vulnerability, and the complexity of human experience. Her music is unapologetically different, offering a refreshing take on the mainstream by speaking to often overlooked emotions and experiences.
1) What can you share with readers about your new project?
Since I first heard the song “Odessa” by Caribou I’ve wished for a cover from a female perspective, and over a decade later finally made one. If you aren’t familiar with Caribou I highly recommend checking them out!
2) How does this release compare with your other projects you had in the past?
Since this is a cover of a song we have immense respect for we felt compelled to do the project justice. This admittedly made me second guess more creative decisions than usual, but we’re very happy with the final track.
3) What about this single makes you most proud?
I’m most proud it came to fruition thanks to epic producer Samuel Kochany aka Sam Helleon. Never give up on an idea even if it takes a decade to bloom!
4) Was there a specific goal you were trying to accomplish with this release?
We hope fans of the original enjoy our take on the iconic song!
5) What inspires you to create music? What motivates you to keep going?
Music truly feels like a life force, I think any musician or listener would agree. It sounds cliche to call songwriting an outlet, but having a project like pssyclwz is an appropriate space for my existential dread to express itself.
6) If you could collaborate with anyone – dead or alive, famous or unknown – who would it be and why?
I’ve always dreamed of collaborating with Damon Albarn (Gorillaz). Everything he makes is so relevant and iconic but still completely unique.
7) What was the last song you listened to?
Escapism. by RAYE, she’s a legend!
8) Favorite all-time bands/artists?
Lana Del Rey, Amy Winehouse, Mac Miller, Gorillaz
9) Where is the best place to find you and stay connected?
my website (pssyclwz.com) or YouTube (@pssyclwz) are my happy places!
10) I really appreciate your time. Is there anything you’d like to share before we sign off?
Thank you for supporting indie artists!
