In this interview spotlight, I chat with Profeus about the latest music, adapting during lock downs, technology and more.
Full Q&A along with links and music below.
Where are you from and how do You describe your style of music?
Greetings! I’m from Mumbai, India. My music is a fusion of modern prog and post rock with Indian elements like tabla, sitar and stuff like that.
How did you get here? As in, what inspired or motivated you to take on this journey through music and the music biz?
Music has always been something that has come naturally to me. I learnt the keyboard as a kid and got into guitar playing as a teenager. I remember getting awestruck when I heard ‘Welcome To The Jungle’ by GNR and the ‘Black Album’ by Metallica and realised that I really needed to play this eventually.
How does your upcoming project compare/contrast with your previous release(s)? Were you setting out to accomplish anything specific, follow a specific theme, or explore different styles of creation?
I’m releasing my debut EP ‘Bloom’ later this year. I wanted to be a bit braver this time with my compositions and create something which sounds unique to my ears(hopefully yours too!). I ended up experimenting with odd time signatures, used the tabla quite extensively, and there is a guest solo by an instrument that I’m very fond off!
Name the biggest challenge you faced as a creative during these unprecedented times? How did you adapt? How have you kept the creative fires burning during all this?
The biggest challenge was the obvious lack of external stimuli. As an artist it’s very important to constantly interact with the outside environment in order to gain inspiration to compose music. This clearly wasn’t happening due to lockdowns in the country. I was reading a lot during these times and read up some helpful articles on creativity which opened up new avenues to be creative despite the shortcomings.
What was the last song you listened to?
I’ll tell you someday – Plini
Which do you prefer? Vinyl? 8-tracks? Cassettes? CDs? MP3s? Streaming platforms?
Head says Streaming platforms, heart says Vinyl
Where is the best place to connect with you and follow your journey?
My website where I also blog sometimes about random shit, my YouTube channel and Spotify to name a few.
I really appreciate Your time. Anything else before we sign off?
Thanks. Those were some interesting questions! I would like to encourage y’all to listen to indie artists as there is some serious talent out there just waiting to be discovered. Please support your local music scene by showing up in numbers for gigs. That would give these talented folks a lot of confidence to pursue what they love and inturn share their gifts with us.
