Full Q&A along with links and music below.
This AI thing is getting way out of control. I have students using ChatGPT to write death metal songs about country music…and country songs about being sad. You can feed some AIs a text prompt and create a Hollywood-quality short film. How do you feel about this new wave of technological innovation?
I think it’s fascinating! But also very very intimidating. With great power comes great responsibility, right? So I think AI has the potential to make a lot of things easier for people and speed up productivity. I’ve definitely used it at work and school to answer quick questions, or draw up some social media content ideas to build off of. However, as an artist, the thought of someone potentially using AI to recreate work I’ve spent so much time on and poured love into, scares the hell out of me. Also, the idea that these AI databases are potentially using my music to “train” their system. It’s a freaky feeling.
I know it’s hard…but what’s your favorite song and/or favorite artist of all time? If not favorite, in your top 3?
It’s super hard for me to pick my favorite artist or song because it changes so much!! I’ve never really had a favorite song, but my top three favorite artists would probably be Adele, The Cheetah Girls (they were critical to my development as a kid haha), and Remi Wolf right now. I could sing the lyrics to every single song of these artists. I know you asked for three, but of course, Beyonce is up there too so I have to include her.
Were you trying to accomplish anything specific or different with “Rose Colored Glasses”? What’s the back story?
With “Rose Colored Glasses”, I was trying to hint a kind of vulnerability that hadn’t been previously present with any of my other singles at this point. There was “Risk”, then “Breadcrumbs”, then “Do You Want Me Or Not?”. Then in 2024, I continued the storylines with “Attentionship” and “Serious”. So I think I had kind of solidified my identity as a “Bad Bitch with Commitment Issues”. My brand as an artist had already kind of been established and I feel like I can be recognized as “the girl who sings about being single and going out in New York”. It’s so much more than that though. The album as a whole is so much more than that. So, with “Rose Colored Glasses”, I wanted there to be a little more raw emotion revealed here that we didn’t see in all those other songs.
The backstory kind of combines multiple different instances of being in the beginning of a relationship that isn’t good for you. It isn’t reflective of just one experience, but multiple, that I built into one storyline. I’m sure many people can relate to ignoring red flags in someone because you’re falling for them. You want to see only the good things, not the bad. You want to envision a future with them, not dwell on the past. It’s these habits and ignorances that inspired me to create the song. I was young and naive and figuring out what I wanted, but I knew it would not be the last time I felt that way. And I knew I wouldn’t be the only one that’s felt that way.
What drives you to create? What keeps you going, especially on the bad days?
What drives me to create is definitely my passion for it. I will always love making music. But, on the other hand, I never want to feel like I have to keep going. If I’m not feeling it one day, I simply just stop, because I don’t want to get burnt out. I rarely intentionally write anymore. I used to sit down at my keyboard every day and force the words out, but I wasn’t making good music. I wasn’t making authentic music. So instead of doing that, I just focused on living my life and I knew that inspiration would spark. It does every time. It’s because I have a passion for music that I let myself forget about it from time to time. If I was 100% focused on creating all the time, I wouldn’t be making music that is authentic to me, I’d just be prioritizing quantity over quality for the sake of saying “I’m a musician”. Anyone can be a musician though, not everyone can be an artist.
If you could collaborate with anyone – dead or alive, famous or unknown – who would it be and why?
Oh this is hard! Sooooo many people. I would love to write for/with Dua Lipa, Sabrina Carpenter, Jess Glynne and Adele. I’d love to collaborate on a song with JP Cooper, Allen Stone, Remi Wolf, and Jesse Gold!!
