In this interview spotlight, I chat with pilton about the latest music, challenges, technology and more.
Full Q&A along with links and music below.
Where are you from and what style of music do you create? (In your own words, not necessarily in marketing terms or by popular genre classifications.)
I’m from the UK, originally from the countryside (like fully surrounded by fields…) but based in Bristol. Right now I’m working on my artistry and developing into creating a lot of dark pop, pop-punk, pop-rap music but I’m pretty versatile as a producer and songwriter.
What led you down this path of music and what motivates you to keep going?
I think over lockdown I had a real epiphany that I want to just start making the music I WANT to make; not what I think I should make. After working with a ton of major label artists too I really just wanted to start making everything that I want too, taking in all the different inspirations to me over the years and putting that into a project: pilton. Music itself motivates me; if I can change someones day or be an anthem to their week, make them dance, cry or feel something then I feel like I’ve done my job – thats what keeps me going and wanting more and more.
How is this new release different than previous ones? Were you trying to accomplish anything specific?
Previously I have done a lot of remix work for major label artists like The Chainsmokers, Lennon Stella, Wiz Khalifa etc which i’ve loved and been honoured to be apart of and have learnt so much to be able to come out with original music. But this comes as the first single where I can say that this is what I’m all about and is the start of something big (hopefully) – the purpose of this single is to make a statement of who I am as an artist now and the start of that journey is now too.
Name one or two challenges you face as an indie musician in this over saturated, digital music age? How has technology helped you (since we know it does help)?
The main challenge is defo exposure – having the right uses of technology can help single you out, make you interesting, different and make you unique but also allows you to work with other indie musicians effortlessly, all growing together, helping each other and creating something new and exciting – which I think is sick.
What was the last song you listened to?
‘GOOD FOR U’ MY NEW SINGLE- I joke. It was ‘Official’ by Charli XCX.
Which do you prefer? Vinyl? CDs? MP3s?
Vinyl for 1920s-1980s; then digital for anything else. I love so much old music though, kinda surprises people.
How about this one…. Do you prefer Spotify? Apple Music? Bandcamp? Or something else? Why?
100% Spotify. They give so much freedom and support for independent artists more than any other platform I know – really really commend them for it.
Where is the best place to connect with you online and discover more music?
My instagram @itspilton.
