Recently burst onto the scene, masked EDM DJ / Producer NuJ4X has set his sights on making a splash With his debut single, “Dab (On Dem Haterz)”. The journey for NuJ4X started when his 13 year old son showed an interest in becoming a DJ. When asking his oldest son what he wanted to be and his son replying a DJ, he decided that he wanted to show interest in what his son liked. NuJ4X began playing around with music, trying his hand at the craft and he found that he liked it. He was pleased as this would be a better way to bond with his oldest son. Thus, the seed of NuJ4X was planted.
In this interview spotlight, I chat with NuJ4X about the latest project, motivations, challenges and more.
Full Q&A along with links and music below.
Where are you from and what style of music do you create?
I create a blend of Electronic Dance Music and Pop. I like to focus on creating catchy songs that are just fun to listen too. I’m from the best place you could possibly be! Nashville, TN. Music City! Man I love this place.
What led you down this path of music and what motivates you to keep going?
Honestly, my son. Last year he told me he wanted to be a world famous DJ and when he got turntables and software and started showing promise, I was inspired. I wanted to connect with him and share that with him, so I started gathering materials to produce music as well. I’m dreaming of a collab with him sometime in the future when we’re both at our prime. He’s an awesome kid and I’m really proud to be his father.
How is this new release different than previous ones? Were you trying to accomplish anything specific?
Well this current release “Dab (On Dem Haterz)” is my first and only release. The road to getting from total n00b to intermediate n00b has been a difficult one. I was trying to accomplish a viral video with this one. I had the Deadmau5 and Marshmello plushes custom made, came up with the little skit at the front of the video of their Twitter beef and just tried to make it fun and funny. It didn’t go viral, which is fine and gives me more opportunities to create more songs and have fun with them and try again!
Name one or two challenges you face as an indie musician in this oversaturated, digital music age? How has technology helped you (since we know it does help)?
Honestly the challenges I’m facing as an indie musician is getting people to engage with me and my content. I gain 10 followers a day on Instagram, but lose 20. An individual will follow me for a day, I’ll follow them back, then they’ll unfollow me because who knows why? Facebook is a mess of shared videos all the time, and Twitter loves hashtags. Its hard to get anything trending. Others in my position face the same struggle and anymore you need a famous, established artist to reach their hand out and say “Let me give you a boost” and if you’re not the one who gets that boost, life is very hard.
Where is the best place to connect with you online and discover more music?
I would say YouTube or Instagram. I’m releasing a new song around the end of this month called “Confessions of a Pop Star” that is written for and dedicated to Lady Gaga. She’s a big inspiration to me and someone I’m a huge fan of. I love her music and her personality and how unique she is. The song is catchy and really fun and I hope (if nothing else) that my fans love it, and Lady Gaga loves it.
Anything else before we sign off?
Yeah, thanks for doing this for me. It made me feel amazing that you wanted to interview me! I want to be recognized by Nashville and raised up by Nashville. I’m so proud to be from here and I’m so proud to live in Tennessee anyway. So you taking a moment to recognize me, is just the best feeling to have. So from the bottom of my heart, thank you! Also, to all of you reading this, thank you so much!
