Los Angeles based rockers Niantic are getting ready to hit the road for a NorCal tour in support of their newest EP, Equinox.
The band has unleashed their lead single from the new album titled Split The Difference. I also sit down with the band for an interview about the new release, challenges, technology and more.
Full Q&A along with links and music below.
Where are you from and what style of music do you create? (In your own words, not necessarily in marketing terms or by popular genre classifications.)
We are LA natives who have been playing and releasing music for a decade now. We try to combine being weird and noisy with really accessible melody, grooves, and lyrics.
What led you down this path of music and what motivates you to keep going?
Ignoring my family’s pleas for me to stick with very promising and lucrative acting career. I’m motivated by one thing: making as many people feel something real as I can.
How is this new release different than previous ones? Were you trying to accomplish anything specific?
This album took longer to record and mix than all our other records put together. Alex did so much heavy lifting on this one both arranging and engineering, after the basics were written and arranged we really wanted to give him space to make all the textures he heard in his head.
Name one or two challenges you face as an indie musician in this oversaturated, digital music age? How has technology helped you (since we know it does help)?
Every time we leave LA, reactions are super positive. Sure, we do fine in our native land, but we are always thrilled to hit the road because that’s where the legend grows best. Especially with so many friends excited about the new record.
What was the last song you listened to?
Tonight I’m filming a rockstar who is visiting from I believe Dusseldorf rehearsing with his studio band before their German shows. So pretty big rock hooks with pretty straight ahead English. Good stuff.
Which do you prefer? Vinyl? CDs? MP3s?
The only thing I prefer is anything not physical. That’s totally me and I’m in the minority and I recognize that. If I never put out a CD again it’ll be too soon!
How about this one…. Do you prefer Spotify? Apple Music? Bandcamp? Or something else? Why?
I was actually an American Spotify beta tester and I’ve made a monthly playlist ever since the summer of 2011!
Where is the best place to connect with you online and discover more music?
